Advice on Career Change

Hello All,

I'm a 40 yrs old guy comtemplating a career change into nursing.

Previously, I was a IT guy so I'm used to being blamed for somebody else's mistakes. :)

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Although I am not yet a nurse, I think I can give you my opinion. Do what you want. Do what you love. Why do you want to be a nurse. I think I may be biased in a way, but if nursing is what you really want to do, then go for it.

If it's something you have always wanted to do, then do it. Life is too short for regrets. You have another career choice if you don't like it, right?

I knew a guy a long time ago, I met him when he was a cop in a pretty rough area, he was hard core....he retired from the police department, I didn't see or hear about him for awhile. I started working at a hospital...lol, he was my charge nurse. He was a very caring and compassionate guy, patients just loved him.

No matter your background or age...if it's something you really want to do, then do it. Time goes by too quick.

Another reasons for my wanting to change is..........

1. Been laid for almost 15 months even going back to school for more IT specific education.

2. A little respect or even preforming work that matters. Formerly my ex-bosses knew we IT guys were expendable and treated you as such.

Lastly, I had remarked to my wife that the best part of my former job was mentoring the entry level developers. Hopefully nursing has the same level of fulfillment.

I'm 38 and going into nursing. I've worked as a teach, a process engineer, and an equipment tech. I highly recommend it. I would say your reasons are sound (assuming you can take criticism as well as kudos, and can focus on your successes when things are bad). I would say that there is a pretty good chance that you'll be treated as though you're expendable at some point in your nursing career (and probably more than "at some point").

I've always wanted to try nursing, but it is the flexibility that appeals to me. When you get bored, you can always try another specialty.

With that said, I would recommend volunteering somewhere to get a feel for it.

Hey, I'm considering the move to Nursing also. I've been in engineering for 12 years, but now am unemployed at 45 years old:eek:. I too would like a job where respect and accomplishment go hand in hand. I just signed up for classes (hope I'm doing the right thing).
