Advice for applying to nursing school...again

Published

Hello everyone. I'm getting ready to submit my applications for nursing school for 2010 and have a couple questions. A little background- Last year, I applied for a BSN program and actually got accepted. I ended up dropping one of my pre-reqs and couldn't retake it before the program started, so I basically forfeited my spot. I'm about to re-apply this year and will definitely be ready to go when the fall semester finally rolls around.

One question I have is about the essay part of my application. The question is simple- Why did you choose this school? Last time I wrote something along the lines of knowing I wanted to be a nurse when my grandfather collapsed and I had to act fast to get him help, staying near my family and being of service to my community. Oh, and quality of education.. can't forget that one.

It's probably a bad idea to just repeat what I wrote last time, huh? I would really, really love to be accepted again. I have all As in my pre-reqs, so I'm good on that front..but I still want my essay to stand out. Problem is, I used up all my good material on the previous essay! Do you guys have any advice? Could I get away with writing something similar or does it need to be totally different? I'm really at a loss here..

Another thing I'm worried about is that fact that I never called to tell the program directors that I wouldn't be able to take my spot. The reason I dropped my class was partially because I didn't like my instructor and didn't feel like I was learning anything from them.. but I was also being kicked out at the same time and was under a ton of stress as I was scrambling to find another place to live. Since I moved, I didn't find out that I had been accepted or called or anything like that until much, much later. I'm sure they figured out that I wouldn't have my pre-reqs done in time on their own by then. Is that going to reflect badly on my application this time around? If so, is there anything I can or should do to better my chances of being accepted again?

If your reasons for applying to the school are the same, I see no problem with using them in your essay.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...why don't you use the same essay? Have your reasons for wanting to become a nurse changed since then?

Use the same essay when you reapply.

I'd also enclose a separate letter addressing the reason for not notifying them previously about your living situation...don't mention anything about the problem with the instructor. Just let them know that you're living situation is stable and that you'll be able to fulfill your education goals.
