Hey all!
I just recently completed my first semester of university at Grant Macewan and I am desperate to get into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. I didn't do the best in my first semester as I was getting used to the course load and all, but I stepped it up a lot in my second semester and ended my GPA with a 3.16 overall. Yes, I've applied at the Uofa and Macewan but unfortunately got rejected as my mail has stated "You did not meet the competitive average, please keep track of your account for any changes."
I'm aware that nursing is extremely competitive, especially at Macewan now that they are recognized for nursing and I needed advice on what I should do.
Currently, I am stuck on the decision to take another year to upgrade my marks taking easy GPA boosters at Macewan or taking my seat at Norquest for the LPN program?

Your question is should you take the PN program learn the foundations of nursing, graduate, become licensed, find employment and gain meaningful real life experience, versus take meaningless easy booster courses in the hopes of being granted admission to a BSN program?...hmm. Which path do you think you will gain more knowledge, skills and ability as a nurse?
The thing is, I want to become a RN. I just don't know if it will be worth it to take another year to upgrade my GPA at Grant Macewan to be accepted.. who knows if I will get accepted for Fall 2017.
I know I will learn a lot taking my LPN and I am sure I will love it. But I aspire to be more than an LPN, I just don't know if BSN will be worth it at this point.
Are you in the program?

I was in a similar situation as you...either stay behind another year to improve my marks or go straight to RPN school. I decided to go straight to RPN after my undergrad. I didn't want to wait another year and risk not getting in. Besides if I do decide to become an RN, i can still do so via full time or part time option after I finish practical nursing. It's still the same amount of years if you're going to stay behind a year to upgrade your marks.

Do do you know what the scope of practise is for an LPN in Alberta covers? Do you know what specialties are available tol LPNs?
Do you know that workplace utilization, the pet project of AHS is reducing the numbers of RNs in the hospital setting?
what makes you so passionate about nursing? It's not the glamour, great working conditions, and respect from the patients, is it?
last we heard, your GPA will have to be at least 3.6
