Adult ICU or peds ICU---How did you know

How did you know whether or not you liked Adult ICU or peds ICU?

Which one do you enjoy more? Which one gives you the greatest satisfaction at the end of the shift? Which one do you look forward to working in more?

I have tried PICU. I enjoyed the preceptorship. I need to try Adult ICU before I can make that decision. Thanks!

I don't work ICU. But I do work geriatrics. When I first went to nursing school, I had this idea in my head that I wanted to work with babies. Alot of us did. But after clinicals, after seeing babies sick and dying, I knew I just couldn't live with that. I couldn't "leave work at work". After doing geriatric clinicals, I knew that is what I was going to do. Sickness and death are a natural part of life, but it was easier for me to deal it with older people because, in my mind, they have lived their life. It was just too hard for me to see babies suffer. When people find out I'm a nurse and they say nurses are angels, I give props to the baby nurses and tell these people that it's the baby nurses who are the real angels. I don't know how they do it. I have so much respect for them.

Easy - I don't like paeds!!

Specializes in a wide variety!.

For me - screaming and crying is a lot more tolerable coming from a 2 yr old than a 42 yo! And another plus...the diapers are a lot easier to change.
