Adult gero vs acute care

Published

Here is my dilemma: I have been accepted into two schools. One is a state university adult gero NP. The other is a private university acute care adult gero. I want to work as a hospitalist, therefore the adult gero program is more of my interest. However, the difference in tuition is huge. I will get some reimbursement from my employer, however, I will still be paying a lot out of pocket. I am $80,000 in debt from previous degree, so I don't really want to take a loan out.

That's unfortunate as I was hoping to get feedback from practicing NPs, not students, regarding job outlook, etc.

What are you thinking as your "end goal" for a job? If you are drawn to the ER or acute care settings, then the acute program may be better suited for you. If you are considering an office position or "hospitalist", then the non-acute program would be better. If you are really unsure, I would suggest shadowing some NPs in these various fields to see what you would like. Good luck!

I'm deciding between working in an ICU or as a hospitalist. I've heard, however that hospitals are starting to require ACNP even for that role.
