Hello everyone!! I am looking for harsh critics! I am applying for an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP track at the Doctorate level and would love for someone to critique my personal statement!
a.) Your reasons, personal and/or professional, for pursuing a program of study to become an advanced practice nurse or post MS APN or nurse administrator with a DNP. (this response should be 500 words) b.) Your career plans as an advanced practice nurse with a DNP after graduation and in the future. (this response should be 500 words).
Being in a profession you love is pure enjoyment. Although hardships may arise, doing anything else would be absurd. I enjoy being a Registered Nurse at **** Medical Center and I take great delight in providing holistic care to patients. With leadership qualities, I have the goal of being involved in the foundation of patient's health. I can humbly attest that my experience with acutely ill patients has allowed me to mature immensely and be a strong advocating member of their healthcare team. Implementing necessary interventions throughout my acute care experience has made me inquire about their status as an outpatient in the primary care setting. Attending two information sessions about the various options the Graduate School of Nursing offers, I am aspiring to be an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner(AGPCNP), obtaining a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree.
Earning an advanced degree as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is challenging intellectually, however, it is rewarding on a personal level knowing you're playing the vital role in the advancement of healthcare. It is to be understood that shortages in the primary care industry may increase due to the growth of this country's aging population. It is imperative that doctorate level advanced nurses are accessible to assist the healthcare system with clinical knowledge and implementation of evidenced based practices. Being able to understand a patient's full picture is important and vital for their health maintenance and for wellness promotion. With intentions to work in the underserved communities in the **** County; developing long-term bonds with patients becomes a priority. Working as a Float RN currently, some patients who do not have Primary Care Providers and could have possibly prevented their initial cause of hospitalization. AGPC-NP track would allow me to remain flexible as the work setting can vary from specialized clinics to private practices. In addition to job security and earning potentials, AGPC-NP track will allow me to be exceptionally competent in assessing, diagnosing and creating a plan of care customized to each patient.
The Doctors of Nursing Practice program at U****r is the perfect place for me to advance my nursing career. The doctorate level of knowledge allows working on a capstone project provides great accomplishment with the ability to implement newly acquired knowledge for either quality improvement or new policy change and even systems change. ***Graduate School of nursing will ensure the success of my future endeavors because of professors like ***** Ph.D. worked hard in being the primary inquirer for the grant that was received recently towards the expansion of primary care in Worcester.
While enrolled, I would love the opportunity to be a part of the Graduate School of Nursing Organization(GSNO), allowing me to provide service in mission trips and provide service in community clinics. Born and raised in *** I joined the Health Ministries through my local church with the primary focus of hypertension teaching and management and at the end of my presentation encourage the guest to follow up with their Primary Care Provider.
My long term goal would be to specialize in palliative care in the primary care/outpatient setting. I have recently taken the course Living with Chronic and Terminal Illness which shed the light on palliative care and the importance of implementation for progressing debilitating diseases. We have had the opportunity of having a variety of guest speakers who have intrigued my interest in the specialty of palliative care. One of the guest speakers is *** NP graduated from this program and currently working as a Palliative Care NP at **** Campus. I have contacted her to make arrangements to follow her to get a more detailed information of what her job entails on a day to day basis. I have recently been accepted in the Palliative Care Scholars Program at the University Campus geared for nurses with leadership skills to become more knowledgeable in this aspect of nursing.
I want to be able to do more research, implement evidenced-based practice for patients eligible for palliative care. With this palliative specialty in mind, I am hoping to introduce my knowledge in the community setting, having the conversation about the quality of life and removing negative stigma against the palliative care aspect of health care. It is too often that palliative care is not incorporated in the acute hospital settings and so integrating this aspect of care in a primary care setting may be beneficial. There is one specific situation made me realized that becoming an AGPCNP with the possible specialization of palliative care was my end goal of my nursing career. I had a 56-year-old patient with end stage COPD who was on the lung transplant list for about ten years. In the conversation about her primary care status, it was mentioned that good rapport was not established so there was no desire to keep up with appointments. Hospitalized often, the patient was never introduced to palliative care, the conversation of the specific quality of life never occurred. The patient coded in the hospital without disclosing what was important in life.
Personally, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is the great blend of compassion and medicine. Having the capability to assess, diagnose and treat the underserved population will change healthcare in these communities. People need trustworthy advanced nurse professionals to empower patients to make life changes and uplift the general health status of these communities providing the foundation to each individual. There are too many people in the underserved community with limited knowledge in terms of health care and I want to be able to reach them. Using With the dedicated professors at **** Graduate Nursing School, I am determined to expand my scope of practice and increase my professional autonomy.
