Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this site. :) I had a few questions.. I just switched from a Marketing major at Texas State University to pursue Nursing at Austin Community College. I do have to take a some pre-reqs(I have alot I have already taken at Texas State) but the counselor/advisor I talked to at the ACC campus didn't give me a whole lot of information on how the nursing program works. I know after I take the pre-reqs I need to take the HESI(?) and then apply but I'm still a little lost on just where to start, etc. Anybody have any advice or care to share any experiences that would help me out? I would appreciate it so much. :) Thanks! And I look forward to hearing from anyone and everyone!

Welcome! First, of course, you need to be admitted to the college. From there you can figure out which courses will transfer. There are 5 pre-reqs and 5 co-reqs that are required. I am sure you know this, but just in case, at ACC they require you to take Anatomy first. But before you take Anatomy, you must take an Anatomy assessment test at one of the assessment centers. If you have taken A&P 1 and 2 then you won't have to take Anatomy and Physiology at ACC. Once you have taken the assessment test and pass with a certain grade, you are allowed to try and register for an Anatomy class. Be warned, it is very hard to get an Anatomy class at the time and campus you want if you are a new student to ACC. By the time of open enrollment, the classes are usually close to full or already at max. After you take and pass Anatomy with at least a "C", you are free to take Pharmacology, Physiology, and Microbiology. Physiology and Micro are classes that need to be taken with separately. I took Micro and Pharm together but I would not recommend taking Micro and Physiology together. Also, ACC ranks their applicants on a GPA basis. There are no interviews or essays like some of the universities require. So I recommend making sure you have all of your co-reqs done before you can apply so you can get the highest ranking possible. Then, as you know, you register to take the HESI and once you have done that and have all your immunizations, you can turn in an application. Some immunizations take 6 months to complete, so get started early.
Alot of this info can be found on the ACC ADN website. If you have specific questions always feel free to ask on these boards. There are plenty of ACC threads and students on here. Welcome aboard!!

If you go to the website...ACC look for the ADN program. They have everything step by step that one needs to get started. It has really been a life saver for me. If you have not started your Hep B immunization, you should really start it. It takes 6 months to complete. Hope this helps.

I would take all the pre-reqs first. Once you have all them you can apply. Even if you don't think you'll get in. That way it will help you gain more review points for the next time you can apply. And while waiting to re-apply you can work on your co-reqs.

OMG!!!! I am a student at Texas State and I am considering switching to nursing at Houston Community College. Nursing was my initial major but had a hard time passing the entry exam.I am having a difficult time gaining interest in the major I am pursuing now ( healthcare administration). If you don't mind sharing, why did you choose to change your major?
