Admission requirements BSN 2nd degree

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello!

So I have decided to start applying to nursing programs. I currently have a degree in history and have a 3.0 gpa from undergrad.

I took virtually no science or physiology classes while in undergrad. I know many accelerated BSN programs allow people to apply while their pre-reqs but wanted to know with my GPA if anybody would advise to take the pre-reqs and then start applying.

Wondering if my chances to get into a better program would be better that way.

Thanks in advance!

My program requires all pre-reqs to be done by December before classes start in May.

Ha, I am surprised that I did so well as an older student too. My undergrad GPA (non-science) was 3.65, my MBA was 3.8 and my science prerequisite GPA for the ABSN program right now is 4.0. Am I getting wiser with age I ask myself? Nah, I just party far less:)

I also have a BA in History; my gpa was 3.23. I would advise starting your pre-reqs asap, and in addition to taking the classes you need, consider retaking any pre-req from your original degree that you didn't get an A in. If you have a 4.0 in your pre-reqs, that original gpa doesn't matter as much. If you get less than a 4.0 in your pre-reqs, then the answer to your original question is yes, your application is not very competitive.

I did my pre-reqs at a community college. I only had Biology and G&D from my original degree, so I had to take everything else: A&P, Micro, Gen Chem and Org Chem, Stats, and Research. In general, community college classes are adequate and competitive. Different community colleges have varying reputations about course difficulty and adequacy, so going to info sessions at the nursing programs you want to apply to is good advice. Feel them out to see if the CC you want to use is a good idea.

I ended up with a 4.0 in my pre-reqs, got into my top choice school, and I am about to finish my BSN in December.
