Admission to Queensborough CC

Published

Today i applied to Queensborough community college and got direct entry because i currently possess a bachelors degree in psychology from hunter college. When first inquiring about the nursing program at Queensborough the admissions counselor told me that all of my credits would be transferred as CR without the actual grades being taken into account therefore i assumed i would have a fresh GPA. However when i went to the nursing department they told me otherwise and now I'm having regrets being that I've already paid $170 in fees in order to be admitted to the college ( commitment fee = $100 and registration fee $70.)

The nursing department told me that my GPA would be calculated as follows

A&P 1 = A-

Math 119 ( College algebra) = C

Psych 101 or 220 = B ( i got the same grades in the hunter equivalents so the replacement won't work for an higher level course)

English 101 or 102 = B ( " " " )

when the nursing counselor calculated my nursing pre-req GPA it came out to a 2.98 and she said that i would need a minimum 3.0 to apply to the program however my A&P 1 grade is about to expire because i took that class in summer 2010 and they only last for six years, she then recommended that i take A&P 1 over and earn an A and that would push my pre- nursing GPA to a 3.07

I then asked her repeatedly if it would be possible for me to just re-take all of the prerequisites and she said that there would be no need because i didn't fail any of the courses that all i should do it re-take A&P 1 and earn higher than the A- received the first time around.

I also scored 116 the first time i took the NLN at hunter and she said thatt that was an ok score

Im just nervous because i know that all of the nursing programs throughout cuny are competitive and she said that "who you apply with determines on if you get into the program" so it is possible to get into the program if i get an A in AP1 if other people applying fall in the 3.0 range.

What do you guys think ? Did i just waste all of my energy and money today or nah?

By the way i also work on the ward at a nearby psych hospital and am constantly being encouraged by the nurses on the ward go for nursing specifically this program because my tuition will be paid for by new york state . :/

Hey!

I'm a QCC nursing student and I think whoever you spoke to is right that you shouldn't waste time and money retaking all of your pre req classes. You are allowed to swap one class for a higher level, but since your A&P is expiring it would be best to just re take it and get your A. If you haven't already registered, you could take the class in the fall and apply for the clinical program in the spring if you can take day classes, otherwise you'll take pre reqs through spring 2017 and start the evening program in the fall.
