Administering meds at an assisted living home

Published

I recently got a job offer by a family member who gives medication at an assisted living home. She used to be an RN but didnt keep up her credentials, so I was wondering if this was legal to do? It is a private job through the family and has nothing to do with the assisted living home at all. Just give the medication that is in their room in a lock box. its already there it just needs to be given to them. I'm assuming the family members could just do it themselves but choose not to, with busy schedules, ect. Was wondering if this was a safe job to take on or not? Not sure what to do.

I am a bit confused by your post. But it is legal to give meds at an assisted living facility and not be a licensed rn. A med aid is trained and cbrf certified to pass meds.

Specializes in Emergency Medicine.

Yes it is legal- I was a med tech in an assisted living in nursing school- no certification, just on the job training. It's dependent upon the state.

Sorry for the confusing post, I have no experience or training what so ever, so My question is if I can be giving medication or not. Can any joe hired by the family do this?

And yes I was trained by my aunt who works for the family, is that sufficient training?

It may vary from state to state but in California you must be an employee of the facility. If the resident does not meet criteria self-administer their meds. Then the meds need to be administered by med tech who has taken and passed a state required medication training and administration class.

Sorry I meant to include u in my comment above

Did you have liability insurance? Someone told me I should get it if I apply for this job.

No, I did not need it. My states requirements are pretty relaxed about administering meds in an assisted living.
