Adelaide nurses - your advice please :-)

Published

Hi everyone! I'm soon to be moving to Adelaide to take up a job at Flinders Medical Centre. I'm really excited but having never been to Adelaide I'm not sure where I should be looking for good housing, local primary schools etc. Are there any Adelaide nurses out there who can give me some advice about good neighbourhoods near Flinders Medical Centre? Or should I look for somewhere further away from the hospital and commute? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!

I don't live down that way, however:

Try www.gumtree.com.au

There is also a caravan park right next to FMC, so call them on: (08) 8276 6695, Marion Holiday Park.

Also try:

Sturt River Caravan Park

Brookside Road, Darlington SA 5047, phone: (08) 8296 1113

These places are all about 5 mins away from FMC. Ask about long term deals, ie: try to negotiate

a longer stay to pay less money, otherwise they won't tell you about them.

Also ask to negotiate with the owner, not just the manager.

The place I'm staying temporarily has long term accommodation, for $250 or $400 p/week,

cheap compared to Melb/Sydney. It's not near FMC though, but takes about

40 mins down South Road, ring 82503747 & ask for Rod the owner re

accommodation (u don't need bond money either).

Also try the Marion Hotel, & the Tonsley Hotel, they do deals sometimes,

but are usually about $50 p/night, which is cheap for that area. Some u

can't cook in the rooms, but there are microwaves & cheap takeaway

places nearby. Go to Kwikstiks near FMC - their t/aways are YUMMY &

not too expensive.

Anyway, these options may give u somewhere temorary to stay.

Good luck, I'm leaving Adelaide soon. I don't really like it here much now.

Hope your job goes good!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

can i suggest you also contact the centre you are working for, some staff advertise shared houses/places for rent on hospital notice boards, or maybe you can make a flyer and email that and ask them to hang it up for you with your contact details.

Great suggestion Barb, most places have a staff notice board, they might even have one on line.

kiwigirl, also go to housing sa when u get here. after you've worked 4-6 weeks, they will assess your income & give you the 6 weeks bond and 2 weeks rent money, here's the website:

http://www.dfc.sa.gov.au/pub/default.aspx?tabid=158

housing sa

gpo box 292

adelaide sa 5001

phone: 131 299 (general enquiries - sa callers only)

phone:8207 0211(interstate and international callers)

phone:131 288 (housing sa maintenance enquiries)

one hint though - if u work fulltime for the 4-6 weeks, they probly won't give u anything cos ur supposed to save up the money yourself, however, if you do 2-3 days a week & get some centrelink benefits, they will help you.

good luck to you.
