acute dialysis nursing

Published

I just started working in acutes 6 weeks ago after working in chronics for 4.5 years and PD for 2 years. Does it ever get where you feel comfortable doing this job?

Specializes in Dialysis.

It depends on what experience you bring to the table. Dialysis experience alone, in my opinion, does not prepare you for acutes because the patients are alot sicker. Add on the plumbing set up for bedsides and it can be very frustrating if you are used to a structured environment. What, specifically, are you having the most problems with?

Oh dear.

Yes, it gets better. But, it also depends on the company (and hospital) you are working in. Each program is different.

I hated acutes, but once I spent a year or two doing it, I love it (with the exception of call). Much of the time, as with anything in life, hatred is due to fear of the unknown.

Yes, you will get comfortable. And when it gets comfortable, it is in my opinion one of the best nursing positions out there. In the meantime, it sucks.

Why do you think it is one of the best nursing positions out there? I ask because I am interested in joining the dialysis field..but when I hear of the negatives am not sure at times.

IT GETS BETTER!!!!! just stick it out for a couple months. I promise.

hi everyone! i am fairly new to dialysis still and woking in in-centre 3:1. i have been an icu nurse, still work there and really want to just do acute dialysis...is there a particular company/agency/recruiter i could work with to only do that type of dialysis? i still want to get more experience in in-centre to get more familiar with fistulas/buttonholes/single needle and everything first. can anyone lend some advice? thank you
