acute dialysis- lets talk money

Been looking through the threads and money is not discussed as well as I need....

Ive been in the ICU for 5 years and half of it traveling. I am now interested in going into acute dialysis and need to know what I am worth. Ive got a job offer in San Antonio with Fresinius and they will train me (she said its about 8 weeks depending on how fast you pick it up). I did a travel assignment in an ICU there earlier this year and would grill the dialysis nurses on their experiences and I think I would really like dialysis. One RN that had been doing this 12 years said last year she made about $100,000. This is of course working 80 hours a week.

So the training is paid hourly and when on your own paid by the treatment. Can anyone in Texas or really any southern state tell me what you get per acute dialysis treatment? Also, is call every other weekend the norm? Is that usually paid even if you do no treatments? Do you take this much call even after working for years? How are Fresinius benefits? Do you like the insurance?

Salary varies with city. In Houston it's about 155/case, I've heard SanAntonio is lower, maybe 95.

Some acute programs pay per hour.

Fresenius benefits are the best. Every other weekend is very normal. Most programs pay you stand by or call pay if you aren't doing cases.

About 9 years ago PCTs were paid $75 per treatment and nurses $100 per treatment.

Southern areas usually $125.00 tx. Davita and some others have gone to hourly wage though. In my area of Florida they went to 25.00/hr but lost thier contract. KRU Medical (AKC) continue to pay 125/tx.

I work acutes now. Not my fav. I make hourly as we have a 5 bed unit. But we do do off-site i.e. ICU etc. I make 40.50 an hour with my $2 diff. I don't get a per tx rate. $125/tx in the middle of the night is only about $21/hr. As a 4 hour tx can turn into 6 hours with set-up and tear down, acid rinse and heat disinfection. When I'm on call I get $4/hr and when I do go in I still get the on-call pay on top of my hourly so I get $44.50/hr x 6 hours = $267.00. North East but not Boston or NYC. During the day if I do an off-site I get my regular rate. Paying by the tx is akin to salary. IMHO

Thanks for the info! Those salary websites are way too vague! Anyone else have some numbers they would like to add? For those of you that get paid by tx, do you get overtime? How is that figured? Do you only get overtime if called in for extra tx?

Along the same lines. I am currently working at an hourly rate of $35/hour and there is talk of going to a per treatment pay of $187. Can I really make more this way. Seems to me if I am stuck doing 1:1 in CCU, ICU etc, that I would actually get less. I did 5 patients yesterday in the unit, while my co-worker did two 1:1 pts. See what I mean?

You have to look at time spent in total. Do you get $187 for every treatment no matter how long? A 4 hour treatment can really be close to 6 hours. With set-up and tear down. We have no techs. We do it all. So at $187 you are making just over $31/hr. Now on a 2 hour treatment that would be fine. Another issue with per treatment $$$ is when the treatments aren't there. You can't rely on a paycheck that way.

Are you saying that in the unit doing 5 patients you got $187 per treatment or your base of $35/hr? Either way you made more if you did a 12 hour day.

I work for an acute facility in MI. It is Davita. We get paid hourly. I am at the top of scale at $35.50. Pay per tx is risky....I have seen people make 100K or 40K...all depends on how fast you are, the census, and length of tx.... Fresenius has a contract at a smiliar size hospital in this county and they paying peanuts....actually insulting to their nurses. I know because we just hired 2 of them. They were paid per tx, and it avg. out to like $25/tx. Sad. Very sad.
