Ack! My Stafford Loan Troubles!

I found out a couple of weeks ago that my school doesn't offer Stafford loans, and was preparing to save up the $$ to pay for school myself. I found a website for a company that (I'm hoping) will arrange for Stafford loans for me, but I'm still not sure that they'll be able to lend to me, since my school doesn't participate in Stafford. Any experience in this arena for any other people? I'm calling the company to ask for sure tomorrow, and I'm really hopeful, because I don't want to have to delay the school thing just to get the cash together to go!

Call your school to find out what loan programs they participate with. They usually keep a list to give to students to help when these situations occur. Start with the financial aid office. I am going to a community college that does not do the Stafford thing either but they steered me in the direction of Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo does educational loans and they even allow for living expenses. It took just a few minutes to get approval and then they can fax you the paper work. You sign it, fax it back and they give you firm approval in 24-48 hours and your check is out the next day.. I hope this helps.. I did get information on Sallie Mae educational loans (called Excel Loans). They seemed to be pretty helpful as well.

Can you go to your own bank and get a student loan through them? My bank told me that if I couldn't get a student loan through the school to come back in a fill out the paperwork and they would loan me the money with the same limitations as the student loans, like first payment due 6 months after graduation.

Luckily I did not need to go that route, but it was good to know that I had something to fall back on.

I had to get regular student loans for this past semester's schooling as the community college I attended didn't participate in Stafford programs (the nursing school I am attending in January does, thank goodness). The regular student loan was at a higher interest rate than the Stafford, but I was also able to borrow a LOT more than the Stafford offered me for the upcoming term. I bet the bank you use would have what you needed, or like someone else said, the school might even have flyers for Sallie Mae or another org. that might help.
