Accreditation - Minnesota

Published

Hi everyone.

I am just winding my my first semester as an LPN student. I had intended to continue on to my RN at this school, however, I was unaware that the RN program at our school is not accredited.

What does the mean? Is it THAT big of deal. All of the students in my class are up in a whirl about it and most are considering commuting long distances just to be able to attend an accredited program.

My goals are to get my RN and then my BSN. Is graduating from an accredited RN program nessicary? I guess I'm just not sure what it means. How am I going to be limited if I choose to stay at my school.

I am not nessicarily tied to MN after I graduate. I do want to finish my education here, but I am willing to move anywhere for a good job. So if you have insight on that (needing to graducate from an accredited program for other states) that would be great.

Thank you for your time.

If it isn't accredited, it is a meaningless piece of paper. You will not be eligible to sit for the NCLEX, and your credits will not transfer. Get out now.

If the program is not accredited then you will still be able to sit for NCLEX, since all operating nursing schools must be approved by the BON. But, depending on your area, most employers only hire graduates from accredited programs. Also you may have trouble getting into RN-BSN programs and getting a license in a different state.
