Accepted Simmons Accel Nursing Dix scholar 2011

Published

Any applied and got into Simmons Accel Nursing Dix scholar in May-Sept 2011 and graduating 2013?

Because it's not just one person's experience. I went to an info session for UMB and the woman in charge of the program DIDN'T SHOW UP and they had a student answering questions...but she didn't know any of the answers to the questions so it left the entire group with an awful impression. Also, the program is only 3 years old!!! You need a program that has a long, proven track record. Simmons was the 1st college in New England to start a Master's in Nursing program and everyone you mention Simmons to is veryyy impressed and knows they have one of the oldest and most excellent nursing programs in New England. Just my opinion--if it were my future, I would take those facts into consideration.

Also, UMB is around 32-35k the last time they sent me their tuition cost. Simmons is very close to that and is a much better education.

Jenna!! Please go to Simmons~!~!! MCPHS is not a good program--I got accepted there as well--and neither is UMass Boston. I have a friend who is now a nurse who did MCPHS's Boston tradition 4 yr program and she hated it--her professors QUIT mid-semester, etc etc, a mess!! The UMass Boston accelerated program is no better than MCPHS--I have another friend who is in it now. She got 1 bad grade and they kicked her out and put her into the traditional, longer program so it took her an extra year to finish. Simmons is known for EXCELLENCE in nursing--it is the BESTTTTT choice--you will not regret it!!

I really want to go to Simmons, but I only wish I got accepted into the accelerated program, I am in the 2 years program now, my deposit is already been sent since I thought I got into the 18months one...my concern is I want to get this degree sooner and without extra expenses since I wouldn't be able to work full time if I was at the 2 years one and that is just way to much for me to afford or have access to such resources for that matter... I know Umass Boston is not great and I am not considering going there I just applied for the sake of it, but now I am leaning to MCPHS in Worcester their program is 16months. I really don't know what to do :(

Hi Jenna,

Yeah I started to get nervous in January when I hadn't heard from Simmons yet and I already knew I was accepted to MCPHS Worcester, so I thought I was gonna have to go to MCPHS. So I understand...and money is definitely important...Did you find out why they put you in the 2 yr one instead of the 18 month one? Did you ask if you can appeal the decision? Or if spots open up (i.e. people who got accepted to the 18 month program don't take a spot and decide to go elsewhere), would they let you in?

Did you receive your financial aid award? If you look carefully, subtract what they say for housing b/c that's something you determine on your own, and crunch the numbers, I bet you can do it. Working part-time isn't too bad--I've been doing it while taking pre-reqs and I survived financially.

You wouldn't really be able work while in the 18-Month Program. It is more possible to work while doing the 2-Year Program. Also, the programs are the same cost, so you'll be spending the same amount of money. The only difference is that the 18-monthers finish in December and the 2-yearers finish in May. Good luck deciding.

Thanks Meggzluv for your encouragement! you make my spirit go up :) yes I did knew the reason although my admission counselor herself though I got into the 18 months, I took a chemistry and other courses back in the old country but I did not finish the semester since I came to the US so it shows in my transcript as Failed :( and what I understood is that Simmons does not accept retake on the prereq for the 18 months. I think I should consider talking to them and explain the reason in me failing the course since it was not my poor performance (I have an excellent GPA for heaven's sake)

I did get my Undergra while working so it's not new for me, I guess I am just worried too much and like the other person said the only difference between the progams is 5-6 months.

Today I met a friend that I haven't met for so long and she told me that she knows a person who graduated from Simmons recently and she was able to get a job few days ago... and that's making really reconsider because I don't want to get a degree that won't get me anywhere like the one I have already

I still have 30 days till I make a final decision, but I try to talk to Simmons meanwhile as you suggested.

Thanks again for your support :)

Actually I got accepted to the 2 years program, what I meant in terms of money is the fact that I am worried that I can't work during all this time, as a result I can't afford taking loans for my expenses for 2 years.

Thanks

You're welcome, Jenna!!! I hope we'll be classmates! And if they do not allow you into the 18 month program even after explaining things to them, you should still attend Simmons b/c it;s only a 5 month difference, like the other person said!! And it will probably be a less stressful program/schedule than mine haha so you are actually lucky

Congrats to you all that got in at simmons, and other schools! I'm feeling discouraged and was wondering if any of you could give some advice on how to stand out or what credentials you have? Would truly appreciate it!!

kiki, just work hard on your pre-requisites and also get a job that has clinical exposure (i.e. get any job you can find in a hospital...you will learn a TON--i did--and it will look good on your application). How far along are you in the application process?

thanks for the advice. The thing is I am done with the prereqs (aside from organic chem for some applications) and I didn't do stellar. Got B's more or less (B, B+, A, one C). It took me well over a year and at the time I was working fulltime and volunteering- so I did the best I could. I've applied to Umass Boston and didnt get in, and I got in the associates RN program at Laboure, but really not sure if I should go that route. I would like to apply to the simmons 3 yr one so I can stay at my job (which is for partners healthcare- but corporate-non clinical side) while i get the degree. I just started volunteering at MGH. I just feel i'm probably like hundreds of applicants that apply- great undergrad GPA- decent prereq grades- good references- volunteer exp... aside from having the straight A's- not sure what else I can do to stand out!

5 things:

1. re-take the one you got a C in b/c I think all of the schools require at least a C+ in the prereqs

2. take chem II, not orgo, as long as the Chem II course you take has 'organic chemistry' somewhere in the course description, you;re all set.

3. take that prereq at a community college if you haven't already been taking your courses at a CC--they're easier and cheaper at a CC

4. don't do the associates...it takes 2 yrs and you could have had a BSN in that time.

5. do less volunteering...even though clinical experience is nice, it's more important that you spend your time studying and getting a good grade in that last prereq and the one you might need to re-take

I totally agree with "Megg" try to keep a good GPA for the prerequisites (A's if possible) because they are the foundation of Nursing and they want to see how serious and interested in this career through your grades, volunteering could help you somehow, but my case, and at least with Simmons, when I applied I haven't started volunteering back then. One more thing that you should do also, is to write a good essay, something different that they haven't heard before, as per references I guess everyone gets good recommendations.

Hope this helps
