Although I am not attending JHU, I am from Maryland. Baltimore is not as bad as people say. It's actually a really fun place & has about 14 colleges in the area. They are slowly renovating sections of it too. There is a reason they call it charm city Good luck!

I am from Baltimore and a student at JHU. Sorry to tell you but the stuff you Baltimore heard about probably is true but the Hopkins bubble is well isolated. Once you leave the bubble, it's a drastic ghetto change. Parking sucks. The drivers here are insane.

I am incoming student at Johns Hopkins (Fall absn). In my opinion, Baltimore is no different from any other city. Having lived in the SF bay area and in the Baltimore metro area, I would say that, Baltimore is not a bad city as it is made to appear. There are safe neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. As in any city, one has to be careful of themselves and their belongings. Do not walk alone at night. Always walk in a group - with friends or classmates, walk in well lit areas, use the campus security to escort you to the parking lot. Also, refrain from flashy clothing or jewellery that would make you an easy target for theives. Do not display your smartphone or laptop computer as electronics is another easy target for theives.

Johns Hopkins has a dedicated campus bus service that can be used to get from several areas of the city to the campus. The campus security is awesome and extremely helpful.

I wanted to start this thread for newly accepted JHU fall ABSN students so that we can discuss anything and everything about beginning nursing school, where everyone is from, moving to baltimore, living arrangements, paying tuition etc.

Also, I live in CA and have never been to Baltimore, although I'm planning to visit in July. Anyone else from the west coast? Can anyone tell me what Baltimore is like? Nothing will scare me away from this incredible opportunity, but everything I've heard about Baltimore is, unfortunately, a little scary...

I've been a Hopkins student for years now (did my undergrad at A&S and then my ABSN at the nursing school) and I have to say the city does have its charm. Yes, it's got dangerous neighborhoods, like all other cities, and I'll agree with a comment above that says the drivers are crazy---that said, if you're prudent and aware, you shouldn't have any problems. Baltimore has a great art and music scene, and for a city, it is not crazy expensive (though, I am comparing to NYC, DC, Philly---which are all easily reachable by train and bus.)
