Acceptance Letters? MGH Direct-Entry Master's in Nursing

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hello!

Does anyone know when acceptance letters will be mailed out for the MGH d-e master's in nursing program? I know it's only been 3 weeks since the January 10th deadline, but I'm sure I'm not the only one biting my nails in the interim. :) I've looked through a few similar threads from a few years ago-- most students seemed to receive letters in early March, but who knows whether their program deadlines were the same. Thought I'd ask the question to get some discussion going. Hope all of us hear back soon! Good luck, everyone!

Thank you so much for all the info, choco! I was unable to attend the info session, and when I asked what I will miss, they said that it was mostly just a meet and greet, and that we will be getting more info in the next couple of weeks... but that was weeks ago. Also, we are supposed to get our email addresses mid-may, which will give us access to the online orientation site.

In reply to the floor experience, just this week I met an NP graduating from the direct entry program at Northeastern who said that people she knows whom have graduated the direct entry NP program at MGH have all had to get jobs as RNs to get experience. This was the first time I had heard anything like this. I was a little disappointed to hear this, because I was under the impression that MGH will prepare us enough that we will not need to work as an RN at all after we graduate. I am hoping that by "people", she really meant "one person", and that one person is just an exception. You never know!

Thanks, SingDana! Sorry you had to miss the admitted students day, but there will be several events during orientation where you'll have the chance to meet everyone! As for the Northeastern student's comment, I've actually had the opposite experience. I know several graduates (more than one :) ) from the MGH program who were all able to find great jobs working as an NP immediately following graduation, and they indicated that this was the case with the majority of their class, so I'm not at all concerned about having to work as an RN. I also spoke with graduates and current students from 3 of the other direct entry programs in the Boston area to feel this out when I was deciding where to go because I had two concerns: clinical/preceptor placement in the NP portion of the program, and employment as an NP upon graduation. I already addressed the point about preceptors in my other post about the admitted students day (I actually was the one who asked the question that day about guaranteed placement for all students during the NP portion), and I really liked their answer (obviously, since I'm going there :) ). I also liked that they are very deliberately training you to be an NP, not an RN, and they said that the additional hours spent doing RN clinical work that some other direct entry programs require were largely superfluous, unless your goal is to work as an RN professionally (and if that's the case, I'm not sure why you would enroll in a direct entry program). Clearly, some people value the extra time spent in a program, and to each his own. For me, I've been a lawyer for 6 years and I can't really afford (time wise or financially) to spend extra time in a program building up RN experience on the floor, when my goal is to be an NP and treat patients in a clinic - a completely different job.

Anyways, best of luck to you! I'm jealous you're getting your email addresses in a few weeks - I'll have to wait another year for mine! :)

hi nat sta, can u tell me a bit more about your application process? i feel like i'm gonna be in a similar position as you when i apply for next fall. i'm not a very good standardized test taker cos those exams just freak me the hell out. did u do well on your prereqs? what was your overall gpa? i just need some info and even a little will help me out a lot. thank you! i'd really appreciate it =)

I may be wrong though....Also, has anyone applied for a graduate Plus loan? If so, do we do this before we get out financial aid packet? Thank you in advanced! I am so confused about that portion of the process!! Thanks!

hey,

The fin aid office told me that everything will be in the mail 2 months before the classes start. That's also when you apply for the Plus loan. So we can just relax right now and enjoy the spring! :coollook:

oh, but one more thing, when is the best time to start looking for apartments if you're moving out of state?

Did you guys get your email accounts already?

hey Nat_Sta, have not heard anything about email accounts yet... Maybe soon = )

Anyone interested in opening a facebook group for Direct Entry MSN and ABSN?

I'll start one for the direct entry NPs class of 2014. Search for "MGH IHP NP Class of 2014"
