Accelerated Programs

I've worked with UofA grads and can honestly say that I wasn't impressed. Most feel that bedside nursing is beneath them and that they are marking time until they "can go into administration or community health". Skills are not well developed and they love to delegate the hands on stuff when they can.

Don't forget about the accelerated program at Western (which is the shortest in the country) I am in the second class and while it is quite busy I am enjoying it we start our clinicals in 2 weeks (we do all the classroom stuff in a block then our clinicals in a block)

I'll be starting the last semester of the accelerated program at U of C. It's a 20 month program.

The quality of instruction has varied, but it is alright if you are a self-directed learner. All of my classmates are highly intelligent and motivated people. Admission is based on grades alone...and everyone accepted got in with much higher than the required average. The university has started to do intake in Januray as well as September so this may make it easier to get in.

Do I feel prepared to work as a grad nurse in 4 months? Not really! The curriculum really spends more time preparing students to be nurse managers than bedside nurses. But I know that on the job, I will quickly pick up the skills I need to be successful.

Just wondering if anyone is in or has completed a accelerated nursing program to become an RN at either U of Calgary, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Toronto and if you could tell me a little bit about the program, your experience, likes/dislikes. It would be greatly appreciated! I am going to apply for programs for fall 2007 and am having trouble deciding which school has the best program.

It means fast-paced. Usually the program requires the applicants already have a previous bachelor's degree in the fields other than nursing, and certain pre-requisites.

The programs take mucher shorter time, they require studying full-time, with no summer or winter break.

You do get breaks in an accelerated program. Depending on how your exams fall (you only have 2 or 3) you can get a month off between terms plus we get the whole month of august off. This year we got 4 weeks off for Christmas and we are scheduled to get 3 and a half weeks off between spring and summer terms.
