Accelerated program at Linfield

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hey out there!

I just found out that I have been accepted from the waitlist into the summer start program at Linfield. Since I am a little behind I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on where to get immunizations and the health check. Cheapest route possibe. Also I would love to hear from anyone else who's starting at the same time or any graduates who have advice. I'm a little nervous and very excited.

Any information would be great. Thank you!:yeah:

Jessica

Its definitely a mix of apprehension, excitement, and stress for me! But really looking forward to starting..... my tune will probably change once we get everything thrown at us next month.

I must admit that I just feel really exhausted... this process has been very intense! I'm still finishing my prereqs too....

Tobygo2: Do you know when and how we will receive those questions? I'm going on vacation right before school starts, so that would be nice to know. And congratulations! Can't wait to meet you in a matter of weeks.

caireid - I'm finishing my prereqs now too so I feel your pain! I'm not sure when we can expect the questions, I just know that the professor is supposed to e-mail us before school starts. I checked Linfield's website and unfortunately there's no syllabus up yet either for Nursing 103.

We'll have to have an "allnurses.com" meet-up :D

Hey Guys,

I'm just finishing up my Bio/Chem pre-req's right now, as well. According to the Summer information letter, the syllabus will be emailed to us by June 14. I did find the Spring NURS 103 syllabus online, although it was taught by a different instructor and it was prepared for spring term, rather than the condensed summer term. However, I suspect the reading will be similar... and there's a fair amount of it. It looks like the spring term class was only held once a week, 3 hrs a day, for 15 weeks... whereas ours (according to my tour guide who took NURS 103 last summer) is 3 days a week, 4 hrs. a day, for 3 weeks. (Although it looks like they've changed it up a little because according to our letter it is going to be six hours of lecture two or three days/week.) 8-o. I already have most of my books and everything (yes, I'm excited), so I'm trying to get a headstart on it.

I wish we had a schedule for summer and had some idea how long each course lasts. Does anyone know when summer term ends? I haven't found an academic calendar that includes summer dates. Just FYI, I do know that our fourth of July holiday falls on Monday, July 5, not Friday, July 2.

Looking forward to meeting you all. Is anyone else scheduled for the Resource Analysis Assignment Lab on Friday, June 25 from 4-6pm? (Jessi76 - I believe you are, since I only see one Jessica on the student list.... my name is Tasha :-) )

For those of you who are interested, here is the schedule/information that my tour guide gave me regarding the accelerated Summer start cohort class/work load:

These clinical placements are made by lottery. My setting was Legacy Emanuel Adolescent Psychiatry, an inpatient psychiatric lock down facility for 9-18 year olds. This clinical is two 8 hour shifts per week for 8 weeks.

NUR 208-Therapeutic Communication-M:9-12. No clinical hours.

NUR 213-Community and Family Health-M: 2-5; Tu or W: clinicals. Clinical hours in a variety of community settings. My setting was a Head Start classroom where I was in charge of teaching 3-5 year olds about nutrition, exercise, brushing teeth, and hand washing. NUR 311-Clinical skills-M: 9-3; T,Th or W,F: 7:30am-2 or 3-9:30 pm. Clinical hours in a nursing home. Three full 8 hour days. In this clinical you implement assessment skills you have learned in the lab setting. The lab also includes learning to give IM, IV, and subq meds; catheters; wound care; sterile procedures; etc.

Spring

NUR 318-Maternal and Child Health-M,Th: 10-12; Tu: clinicals (7am-7pm) for 8 weeks of the term. Clinical hours are on a labor & delivery/postpartum floor or a pediatric floor in a hospital. This clinical is one 12 hour shift per week for 8 weeks. My setting was Legacy Salmon Creek in Vancouver, WA. Other possible sites for my term were Salem Hospital, Providence St. Vincent's, Legacy Emanuel, or Southwest Hospital in Vancouver, WA.

NUR 313-Chronic Illness-M,Th: 9-12; clinicals Tu and W for the other 8 weeks of the term. Clinical hours in a variety of settings from diabetes clinics, dialysis clinics, oncology, rehab units, prisons, home health, hospice, etc. This clinical is two 8 hour shifts per week for 8 weeks. Summer

NUR 316-Acute care-Th, F: 9-12; Tu, W: clinicals, 8 hour shifts. Clinical hours are on a med/surg floor. I can't tell you much more about this course or clinical because I haven't done it yet. Sorry :(

There is a 5 week summer break starting the last week of July and going through August.

Fall

NUR 416-Leadership-M: 10-12 and 2-4 for the first 8 weeks of the term. I'm not sure what the clinical hours or days are for this class. As far as I know you shadow a nurse manager for these clinical hours.

NUR 419-Practicum-M: 10-12 and 2-4. For this class you choose an area of nursing that you want to be in and the coordinators try as hard as they can to get you placed in a unit of your choosing. I don't know the amount of clinical hours for this class but you work the hours of your nurse preceptor. I have heard some placements for this term and they range from ICU, NICU, med/surg, oncology, labor & delivery, etc.

Here is the link to the academic calendar. It's along the left hand side, first link I think. Has all our vacations, etc. A little bit of light in all of this chaos!

THANK YOU! Everytime I've looked for it, I've always googled Linfield Academic Calendar and never been able to find this one! Wow... absolutely no break between Summer and Fall. We're going straight through until Thanksgiving Break with only a couple days off for fourth of July and Labor Day. :sofahider

Hey everyone!

Yes, very nervous! I thought for a little while that I might be ableto keep my job on a very parttime level, i'm just a server at a McMenamins, but yesterday I turned in my notice. After reading the orientation information I realized that I should really only have one focus right now. I just hope I can get a personal loan-waiting to hear back.

Just got it for $3.23!! Thanks. I heard from my mentor that the professor will send us some focus questions and it helps to wait until we have those questions to read. Apparently we'll have to write a couple of short papers on them. The book sounds interesting!

Anyone else getting really nervous since it's so close?

Tobygo-when did you get hooked up with a mentor? I heard we were supposed to, but I have not had contact with anyone yet. I have the email account, but I have only recieved mass emails going out to the previous cohorts.

Tasha-Hey thanks for all of that information! I am also finishing up my prereq's. I'm at PCC taking Micro, Cultural Anthro, and developmental psych, (Which sucks because I have taken psy 215, but it was too long ago for PCC's program-and I didn't even get in there!) Anyway, I was wondering where you saw my name on the list for Resource Analysis Assignment Lab on Friday, June 25. Where can I find this list?

We should have an allnurses meet-up. Anyone interested in meeting for coffee before the orientation? There's a Starbucks right by the school. I know it's pretty early, but I always get places super early on the first day. I have a semi-irrational fear of being late:eek:. Good luck with finals for those of you still in school!

The schedule was a yellow piece of paper they just mailed us along with all of the orientation information.

I'm game for a pre-orientation meetup! :) Where's the Starbucks? I don't recall seeing it.

Tasha-Haha! Duh! I looked at that paper already. Silly me. The Starbucks is on the corner of NW Overton and 23rd. Just a block up form the hospital. Have you heard from a mentor yet?

You guys want to meet at Starbucks at 8:00 on Monday, June 21? I think that would give us enough time to chitchat and get back to Linfield for Check In at 8:45.

No, I haven't heard from a mentor, yet.... I just checked my Linfield email yesterday.

Tasha- that sounds great.

I'm up for a pre-orientation meet up. Maybe it'll ease some of my nursing school jitters. The papers on our orientation schedule really do make it all real. Jessi76 I also have that semi-irrational fear of being late... I'll probably even be early to the pre-meeting at starbucks... I know I need help. :)
