Accelerated BSN programs

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello, I am new here. I have applied to 2 semi-local BSN programs. I just completed the essay I had to do for one of them. I am so nervous about it though because apparently the programs are very competetive. I am an older student. I graduated from college in 1994 with my B.S. in mathematics. I have taken 2 semesters at community college for various reasons (lol) and right now my cum GPA is right around 3.47. I am missing a few of the pre-reqs and I am starting to take them in january. What do you think the odds of me being accepted are. I know it is a shot in the dark question, but I am not sure what they are looking for specifically in a student.

Different schools look for different things. Some emphasize work experience, others emphasize grades. I know of one school that prefers younger students (those under age 25), and another that prides itself on the diversity of the student body (in terms of gender, ethnicity, languages spoken, GLBT, first-generation college students, etc.). There is no easy answer to your question.

It is best to ask those schools exactly what the demographic profile of the 2009 class was (mean gpa, mean age, etc).

2nd UVA. It really depends on the program. You have a good GPA, and most of the schools I looked at appreciated the diversity of applicants.

Try not to stress about it too much- hard, I know- but your application is probably a lot stronger than you think it is. Worst case scenario, you have to apply again and cast a wider net.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I have always done well in school, so academically I should be ok. Some of my pre-reqs are really old and I hope that isn't a problem.

If I had to take a guess, most nursing schools look at certain core classes such as micro, A&P, math, etc and see how well you did on them. I think these are most important, then maybe volunteering, residency, etc.
