Penny Sartori, an intensive care nurse in the UK, has just published an academic study of near-death experiences (NDEs), titled Near Death Experiences of Hospitalized Intensive Care Patients, a Five Year Clinical Study.

Ms Sartori decided to launch her formal study in 1998 after working closely with critically-ill patients throughout the 1990s and discovering there was very little reference data available for nurses and other healthcare workers.

She spent five years compiling the study, three years writing it up and two years preparing it for publication.

Do you believe in Near Death Experiences?

Yes, I definitely believe in NDEs. I have several friends that have had them. I sought them out after my mother died, and was searching for NDE information on the internet. IANDS.org-International Association for Near Death Studies has group members that meet in almost each state. I attended one of the meetings in NYC, and was fascinated. I met over 10 people who had NDEs from various experiences; one had an etopic pregnancy, another was a baby whose umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck at birth, and he continued to have dreams about it for many years, one was struck by lightening, another a car accident. I was close friends with these people for many years until I started nursing school and had to decrease my participation with their monthly meetings.

Yes, I am a true believer and love hearing stories about them.

She didn't do an academic study. She wrote a book- big difference.

To answer your question, yes and no.

I believe patients can experience sensations and even lucid dreams, but that there is a non-supernatural explaination to be found instead of a woo woo one.

Yes, and I love to read stories of NDEs. When I was in college, I used this topic for my persuasion speech in my speech class. This is a topic that truly fascinates me.
