Hi All!
I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??
Does anyone have any pending pre-reqs? I'm finishing up my last two (Micro and A&P II) in the next two weeks- but those grades aren't on my transcript yet. They have assured me that it's not a big deal as long as I report the grades, and pull out an A or B.
Still hard not to think about that as a detriment. :/
Oh Asheville- I LOVE Asheville. I'm originally from Pawleys Island, SC but now live in Columbus, OH. REALLY hoping to have a reason to move back down South!!!
GenevaMarie - I am originally from Columbus, but now I'm in Charleston SC. Pawley's is a great place, you must miss it...
I am currently finishing my Micro prereq as well as Dev Psy which is not really a prereq but on their highly-recommended list. I was advised to have my professors email my grades as of the deadline so that they could be factored into my admissions review, and then resend the transcript once the grades have been finalized. Both my professors should be doing that this week.
I don't know if you are aware that we've been reprimanded on this thread for mentioning specific people at Duke (I don't want to point fingers, but I'm pretty sure it was MaryAsh ). Anyhow, PM if you want to discuss it, and I can let you know who I spoke with and to whom I am having the emails sent.
Chow!
Hi!
I too love Asheville! Its such a fun funky town. I will be sad to sell my house and leave the mountains but hey, I can always come back!
I have't a clue what Kebunt is talking about, I would never ever disobey the laws of All Nurses as I have throughly read and can recite the rules associated with the site. Hahaha :loveya:
I finished my classes this summer. I signed up for Nutrition for this Fall but ended up taking a new job where I couldn't get to the class so I dropped it.
GenevaMarie, you need to get yourself back South ASAP and I think going to Duke would be great way to do so!
Carolina congrats on being waitlisted at Chapel Hill. I decided not to apply there because I really don't want to get my CNA liscense, nor do I have time with work ect. Yuck!
I'm wondering about the Dec 1 deadline. I am getting my final letter in tonight and I know they have to go through several hands before they make it to the School of Nursing admissions office. I am freaking out that if I send out my last letter tomorrow, it will not be through the right hands by Dec 1. Do you think they will take it if it is post marked before Dec 1. I am freaking juuuuuuuuuust a little....
Mary Ashley, NO WORRIES! I spoke with *a lady* at admissions last week, and she tells me that they aren't that busy yet because the massive majority of appications will be overnighted for December 1st. So you'll still be days ahead of almost everyone:) Obviously, they are not going to turn EVERYBODY away!

UNC actually doesn't require a CNA license to apply. I definitely don't have one. I think you automatically get it with your first semester of classes so that you can do your clinicals as a CNA. Please don't quote me on that!
Luckily, I took the prereqs when I got my undergrad in biology. BUT, that was years ago (over 10, and please don't repeat that!) So my grades are good, but not brand new. I'm hoping they'll value my "life experience" since college. HA! HA!
I feel that if your last letter of recommendation doesn't arrive until after Dec. 1st, it wouldn't be a problem. I think the deadline is mainly for the application itself, but I'm not certain. I had to request a transcript from a school in Spain where I studied abroad, and I was told if they didn't receive it by Dec. 1st it wouldn't be a problem.
Carolina- Ohhhh "life experience" I like that. I have LOTS of that too...its been almost 8 years since I graduated from college so my "not so new grades but lots of life experience" box is checked too! Good to know about Chapel Hill. Maybe I'll throw my hat in the ring last miniute. I am really hoping to go to Duke though Chapel Hill is a precious little town.
Kebunt- you are a mess. I think we should call that person at Duke..."She who must not be named" hahaha.
KSpills- Thanks for the great info, you made me feel way more relaxed.
Ok ladies...cutting out of work early to go pick up my last letter. Wish me LUCK!

Now wait a minute there, MaryAsh...nice things to say to everyone else, but I AM A MESS?? Ok, fine. How did you know? Haha! I did hear from *her* today. She's won't be in the office until next week, but says she'll update my file on Monday with the stuff I overnighted for today. Yours will there by then too. See, it's all coming together:) Now go get that letter and report back!
I absolutely agree with Kspills. They said they're not that strict about the deadline, so don't worry if things come in a little late. I was just worried that my letters would NEVER be done! My professors are great, but oh so easily distracted...
Carolina11 - Thanks! That's really helpful info about the CNA thing. I am sure MaryAsh will be as happy as I am to know that UNC doesn't need letters of recommendation! Ha!
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to take a second to introduce myself-- I, too, am desperately hoping to get into Duke's ABSN program this fall. Ever since I started seriously researching schools a year ago, it's been my top choice. I submitted everything yesterday so, now the waiting begins.
I have a 3.7 GPA from a fancy school where I did my undergrad, high GREs, and A's in all of the pre-reqs that I've been completing at community college. But, I've never really worked in health care so, I hope that doesn't hold me back from getting in.
I wonder if it's easier to get in for the Spring since they just added that cohort? I hope it doesn't come to this... but, we could always re-apply this summer! (I know, I know, I shouldn't even say that at this point. I mean we're all going to get in, right?). First step is just praying for an interview so we can win them over in person! :)
Happy Thanksgiving!
A.

I also applied to UNC's ABSN program for Jan 2010 and am on the waitlist...
I think they start contacting applicants pretty soon after the deadline, but not sure how that works with the holidays. They will have to give enough notice so that you can arrange an interview in January.
