ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

Good question kspills, I was going to ask the exact same thing.

I spoke with you know who today, and they cannot accomodate early notifications even if you have another school that needs a commitment. If they do it for one, they'd have to do it for all and they want to be fair:) She did say they'll try to make the notifications as quickly as possible, however. Also, the accidental (oops) email list will be getting longer as they are still reviewing and granting interviews. But no worries. How much longer could it possibly get, right?

Maryash,

There is not a dedicated dog park in W-H, but there is at least one park (Indian Trail Park) with a big field that is kind of secluded where I have seen people let their dogs off leash to play in the mornings. However, there is a dedicated dog park nearby at Northgate Park (http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/parks/dog.cfm).

Ok Gator. I'm sold, Watt-Hillandale it is! Thank you for all your awesome information.

Okay so I'm sure everyone got the "just kidding" email today about the fourth Duke Day. What does this mean? Just wanted to start another speculation conversation... Heehee...

I think it means they had most everyone signed up for the three original days, got more replies for in-person interviews than anticipated, tried to add a fourth day, and ended up in MASSIVE CONFUSION as people tried to switch, etc etc... and they finally decided it wasn't worth it.

Just a guess, though! I'm glad they're keeping it to three days. One fewer week to bite my nails waiting for a decision.

Telephone interviews are not yet scheduled by any one yet. May be they will let us know about it next week.

CAROLINA- I somehow missed your post before! You must be so thrilled to start classes.

I was glad to see that they canceled the fourth Duke Day since that means we might get our verdicts a week earlier. Yay!

I actually had an interview for another program this week and I think it was good practice for Duke. The interview went okay but, I definitely could have done better. I realized when I left that I didn't say half the things I had planned to say when I practiced my answers to the typical questions. Oh, well. I think I got thrown off because the interview didn't quite go as I expected. The woman kept me waiting at the front desk for 20 minutes and then didn't apologize or offer an explanation for why she was running so late. Then, she told me that she hadn't looked at my file! She didn't even know where I lived or what school I went to for undergrad. So, most of the interview was spent with me just telling her things that she would have already known if she had at least glanced at my resume. Needless to say, it didn't give me a very good impression of the school.

But, I still have high hopes for Duke. I'm thinking of that interview as a dress rehearsal for Duke Day.

I hope your weekends are off to a good start. I just got back from volunteering at the ER (which is how I spend my Friday nights). I felt like I really connected with a bunch of patients tonight and I'm starting to feel really confident now that I've been volunteering there for a while. So, that's a good feeling.

Bed time for me. I'm getting up early to go skiing tomorrow. Last semester, I left the house at 5.45 AM every Saturday to go to Anatomy class for 8 hours so, the idea of going skiing on a Saturday is incredible! :yeah:

Speaking of school... Are any of you finishing up prerequisites this Spring? I'm doing Physiology but, it doesn't start until the 25th so, I'm in the middle of a nice little break. If only I didn't have to go to work...

Telephone interviews are not yet scheduled by any one yet. May be they will let us know about it next week.

Yeah, I hope so. She said they are trying to schedule them in blocks rather than all over the place, I guess it will be easier for them since they need two faculty members on each call. Also, they have to get a final figure for phone interviews before they'll know how much time to block off, and they're still inviting people to interview...

Nice lady did say that the timeframe will be similar to inperson interviews...so I guess in the next 2-4 weeks?

Abbie Grace - Sorry to hear your interview was unnerving, but I am SURE you did better than you think! :smokin: Remember all the previous Duke threads with people saying how they bombed their interview but then they got acceptance phonecalls three days later? Either way, you're right about it being good practice for Duke. Any idea how many faculty members will be sitting in on the in-person interviews? That's the part that makes me nervous...

I was nervous too, but then I realized - I'm actually really looking forward to talking to the faculty there about my specific interests and how I could pursue them as a nursing student at the school. Once I started looking towards the interview with that anticipation in mind, the nervousness has sort of faded into the background. Now I'm just impatient. How is it still 20 days away??

Wait, holy crap... how is it ONLY 20 days away? Ha!

Abbie - yes, I'm taking A&P 2 and Microbiology this semester. We started on Tuesday... southern schools are on such an early schedule! I'm really excited about micro, though. I've already read 2-3 chapters ahead in the book... it's so interesting. I love these science classes! And my boyfriend's brother in law is a neurology resident at the hospital here, and he's teaching the med school's neuro lab this semester, and has given me an open invitation to go in and learn some more advanced neuro stuff and study all the brains/spinal cords/etc they have. I'm all giddy about it. :) I really love neuro, wish we had gone more in-depth with it in A&P 1.

Twois - I adored Micro when I took it last semester! I bet you'll love it. Your classes do start early! I don't go back until January 25th but our classes last until the last week of May. I wish we started sooner so that we could get out earlier. Last year, I had my finals after Memorial Day which is just crazy.

Abbie and Twois, I'm taking A and P II and Micro this semester. Sad to go back to the work/school routine starting Tues but it's one step closer to all my pre reqs being done! Glad to hear that Micro is interesting, this is encouraging! I just ordered my book off Amazon yesterday so look forward to getting aquainted with it. Abbie I also spend Friday nights at the ER volunteering! I'm in the back ER at Wake Med Cary. Where do you volunteer?

Didn't get my new interview jacket as planned this weekend. But hair is officially "did"! ;)
