A few questions about a job

Published

Sorry if this is long! I posted some of this over in Staff Development, but didn't get an answer. Well here is the story. I have been unemployed (by choice) for a few months, when I started applying it was easy to see the tides had changed. I sent out about 40 resumes. I finally got ONE call. I applied for staff nurse, but during the call she stated she had a staff development position as well. It wasn't something I think I would have applied for, but now I am interested. I was feeling very burned out as a staff nurse and was actually thinking of moving away from nursing all together.

So, here are my questions. I have several years in LTC, but not eduacation. Should I try this? Also, what is the salary like? More or less than a staff nurse. Truthfully, I will be happy to get a job out of this interview, whether it be a floor nurse or staff development~

Thanks!

At most places, at least around here, the Staff Development Coordinator is considered a manager so you might be salaried but if not the hourly rate is a bit higher than for staff nurses. You have to be well organized..computer skills certainly help....creative so people want to come to your inservices. If you take the job...call all your vendors. Chances are they will have someone who'll come out and give an inservice or two. It's a great job.

It seems strange to me that someone with no education experience would be ask to manage such a dept, but perhaps they need another educator. Salaries are close to what staff nurses earn, minus the differentials. Hours are usually day time, but that depends on when classes are held. I think you should at least ask to see the job description. It may lead you in a new, exciting direction.

Like I said it wasn't something I sought out, and nothing will probably become of it. But everyone has a first time at everything. It is odd they even mentioned it with my lack of experience, but we all know that in LTC if they really need someone to fill a spot, they will offer it to anyone!

Give it a shot. There just might have been something on your resume that struck her as your being more than "just anyone."

I don't miss the med cart. I am having trouble finding a groove as a nurse manager but it was worth the stress of making a change even thought the money is a big $1.5 an hour more.

I am thrilled to have an interview! I passed up a Director position during the summer for a small sister facility, and kept kicking myself after. If the opportunity for change comes along again I am not going to pass it up.

I do know there will be a LARGE learning curve LOL. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

I agree with Sue, Give it a shot. It might turn out to be the best decision you made.

Several years back, I worked as a responsible person/aide at a level IV rest home, and when the administrator was leaving I was offered the job interm, and eventully permanent, didn't have a lot of administrative experience, but was willing to give it a try, Everything worked out fine I loved the posistion,Would still be there if Board Of Directors hadn't decided to close the place.

I am not in the position to pass anything up right now LOL. I am looking forward to the interview. Either position would be fine with me right now. :yeah:
