A piece of Talking Furniture...

Ever been through this? You and your fellow nurses are busting tail, trying to take care of a gozillion people, your supervisor tells you: Yeah, yeah, I'm getting the numbers up for the big boss, so I can JUSTIFY having another nurse. The day of the big meeting comes...and, viola! Does the discussion ever get brought up? NO! Our supervisor sits there, like a piece of talking furniture, as the big boss berates the three of us...for not being MORE productive. Then, the big coup-de-gras comes, as big boss announces that we are going to have to work 7/7, until ALL the work is caught up! And what does our big supervisor say to that?: "well, I guess WE'll have to dig in".

Who's WE??

Well, guess what? While's she digging IN, I'm digging OUT....ALL the way to another job! What a crock of s---!

Count me in Cheerfuldoer! Can we have it in the South? My damaged bones and joints from nursing can't take the cold anymore!

Suits should never have taken over hospital management!!!!

I put in my notice this week. Less than two weeks to go and I'm outa my s#$$%y situation.

I'm making an advisment appt at the local university.

I've been thinking about this a lot, myself. I think that nursing as we know it will no longer exist in another 20 years.

Also, when I see all the excited students on these boards, I feel for them. In a few years, they'll be right where we are now. But, how can you discourage someone from persuing their dreams?

Where I work there are 3 new grad LVNs. All three are actively persuing ways out of nursing, already!

I don't think it will be either. I started noticing that 19 years ago. I was working in a small community hospital on the 3-11 shift. A doctor who was making rounds on one of his patients asked me to bring him a dressing tray. The House Supervisor stopped me, pulled me aside and told me: "That's not your job". For a moment or two I was so stunned by her remark that I didn't know what to say. Then, I thought about my patient, and that was all I needed to know, before I politely but firmly responded: "It is my job, and left her standing there.

If taking care of our patient's needs is not our job, then whose job will it be...when we are all gone?
