i always struggled with anatomy and physiology while in school. i did decently in the class because we also had a lab, and i spent more time memorizing than comprehending facts because it was just too overwhelming. since i graduated, i had always wanted to have a reference book that explained things simply and to the point. anyhow, a month ago, i received an email from amazon that suggested this book. on a whim, i decided to purchase both, the text as well as the study guide and finally, i began to be able to put the pieces together for self comprehension. i had gotten angry, then, because had this even had been listed as a suggested reading for students taking anatomy, i would have breezed through the class.
the name of the book is: the human body in health and illness by barbara herlihy. it does not omit medical terminology at all, nor is it written as "fun with dick and jane", but it is a very reader-friendly book that makes one comprehend. she is funny, entertaining and the pictures are very helpful. i started remembering what the professors were saying that totally confused me, but, now, i incorporate it into my patient teaching and can better correlate it to what is happening with the human body when it is no longer in homeostasis. even if you purchase one of the earlier editions for cheaper, it is well worth having this in your library, particularly for lpn students or the layperson. it even includes information about medications, which can be correlated to nursing immediately. had i heard of these things in the beginning, i would have been able to apply this information in a better manner earlier. if you all are fine with the current anatomy textbooks you have, that is great. but, if not, please consider purchasing this god-send!
