A Melbourne choice to make.. between The Alfred and St Vincents Private (Cardiac...)

Published

Hi,

Our move is getting closer, and right now I'm not quite sure which choice to make.

I am being offered a position by two hospitals in Melbourne...

1) at the newly opened (Jan '08) 3CTC, The Cardiac And Thoracic Centre of The Alfred Hospital.

2) at the Cardiac Unit of St Vincents and Mercy Private Hospital.

Can anyone give some feedback on either one of these wards/units/hospitals, or maybe you have knowledge of both?

How do they compare with..

- Nurse patient ratio?

- Organisation on the floor?

- Stress levels?

- Support in career development/education?

- Are night shifts equaly divided among all nurses? How often night shifts?

- Staff attitude (positive atmosphere, hectic, don't care, great teamwork, etc.)

- Salary?

- Secondary remuneration? (health insurance, gym, car park, etc)

- Holidays?

More or less I'm curious about the overall conditions, how nice the colleagues will be, how organised the work is, and then all the other job things...

Anyone who has any kind of feedback to give (how little it may be), that would be great!

Any questions I didn't ask?

Thank you guys!

Nurse-patient ratios are mandated by the state, as are salaries. Private and public pay is slightly different, and the pay scales are available online at Wageline.

You probably won't find anyone with experience of 3CTC because it just opened. I did work at the Alfred SICU and have posted about it before, I liked it.

I've worked in the OR at the Alfred and loved it, great hospital.

I'd go for the Alfred, it's great to be part of a new unit.
