A&P 1 and Micro during same quarter...

Published

Hi all,

I've done a search of this forum, and found a few threads on this (not much advice though).

Here's the rundown: I only have AP 1 & 2 and Micro to take before I've finished my pre-req's, and I was hoping to apply for Fall '08 entry into Nursing School. I began to take AP1 last quarter, but dropped after the first test (even though I got an A) because I got freaked out - I have three young children with my DH (ages 3, 4 & 7), and we have been having money problems, tried to sell our house but couldn't, and now we are stuck in it until the spring (when we'll put it back on the market again). I'm sure you've been hearing about the folks that are stuck with sub-prime mortgages that they can't afford - well, that's us. So, basically, last quarter I succumbed to the pressure and dropped without a W on my record (this allowed my husband to work more overtime, but it hasn't helped that much, unfortunately).

I've been miserable, thinking that "maybe my dream of nursing just isn't meant to be right now." I've also been surfing this site, and reading some of the inspirational stories about students who have trudged through and been successful, with three or more kids, etc. Earlier this week, I registered to take A&P1 and Micro to give it another go.

So, my question is this: Am I crazy to take A&P1 AND Micro together in the same quarter? I know it will be a TON of work, but I would appreciate any advice anyone who has done this has to give me. I do have somewhat of a support system, and my husband supports me (although I know he's worried that once I get into the quarter, I might drop again).

i'm taking a&p II and micro this semester. i have one child, and my husband is always at work. so i've negotiated my class and study schedule around school pick-ups, drop-offs, school activities, homework, etc... it can work if you have help. i've got straight As with no extra help. i've worked my a$$ off for it, but it's possible -- especially if you have any kind of support system. whatever you decide, i suggest you see it through 'til the end. you'll feel better having done that for you. i wish you well :-)...

Hi Danielle,

All I can say is keep plugging away and take it one semester at a time, in the long run this will help your family so much! I hear ya on the kids and finances, we are barely hanging in there too, I also have 3 kids and am 39. I have had to drop out a semester hoping to get work and pay some bills but it never materized the amount of time the kids would be in day care to the amount of money I would have made was so not worth it for me.

I took AP2 and Micro together last spring and AP1 and Chem together the fall before that, it is indeed very do able!!! It's a lot of work but hey it's only 16 weeks, you can do anything when you know there is an end in site and this is the last push for you! If these are your last to pre-reqs GO FOR IT!! It will be that much closer to getting where you want to go.

Catzy5 - thank you so much for your words of wisdom! I, too am 39 - its amazing how similar our situation is. I know that, in the long run, this will be the best choice for me, an for my family. Sometimes you just need to hear it said by someone else. That's why I love this site - there are so many inspiring stories on here, from people of all walks of life. I can always find something that helps me get/stay motivated. I just let the stress get to me last quarter. Thank you! :balloons:

This is so true I have been reading and posting here for a while, so many times I would come on with the exact same situation as yourself, there have been so many times I have felt frustrated, lost, confused, happy and confident LOL. Your story is right now motivating someone else. I wonder how people have survived without these support systems we are so fortunate to have!

I took A&P 1, and micro over the summer together. I got A's in both of them. I am not a super smart person, but I was incredibly motivated. I remember feeling scared because we just spent a bunch of money on the two courses. I called my husband and said, "I'll be lucky to get C's in these classes." I stuck with them and the load required. I stayed for the entire lab each time, and really studied when my daughter (toddler) slept at night. I had one child at the time, but 8 months pregnant. My parent's helped out. This can be done, but I feel like you'll need some help (caretaking of children wise). There was a girl in my class that had 3 children and got a B (she was dissapointed with herself) I thought she kicked butt. She did not get childcare help and literally was a mess in the middle of the course but she stuck it out. Don't drop out. Stay with it. My worst test was the first one in A&P and you got an A. Stay with it. I have two kids now (19 month old, and 3 month old), and will be taking A&P 2 and nutrition without my parent's help but with my husbands help. My mantra right now is "Pain now, happiness later." Truley I have to psych myself up almost everyday to keep it up. You can do this!

I don't have any kids but I do work and I took AP1, Micro, Chem and Developmental Psych this semster and while it has been hard I am almost done, Finals next week, and I have all A's going into it. You can definitely do it.

You kick butt too!

OMG, thanks houstonmr! I have been on myself that I have to have straight A's to get into nursing school so I have been pushing myself. I have suprised myself as I have an accounting background and all this science is new to me, but I love it.

you must be highly motivated. Where are you applying for nursing school at? Did you notice that people tried to discourage you in taking these classes altogether? You should be so proud of yourself, good job.

Sorry to hijack the thread....

I am highly motivated...partially due to being type A, partially since it is so hard to get into nursing school and also since I feel obligated to do so since I have taken a huge paycut to go back to school and feel I owe it to myself and my husband.

I am applying to Loyola ABSN, UIC, and Purdue ABSN. I can't wait to hear something!!!

Thanks again.

This is what I was hoping for when I originally posted - thank you so much for the advice and encouragement - houstonmr, you kick butt too!! I totally agree with you - this last fall, before I dropped AP1, I was getting these constant, low rumblings from my support system (not my husband, but mostly my other family members) that I was in over my head. During a time of stress, I chose to believe them, and dropped the course, thinking "what, am I crazy? They must be right, and I've got too much going on in my life to be able to do everything." I regret this decision, but now I'm choosing to look towards this next semester - in a positive and focused way. Now, I am more committed than ever, and I see a light at the end of the tunnel as I journey to the end of this school year (hopefully, in the words of my Dad - it's not an oncoming train!!). It's really helpful to know that others have successfully handled this heavy work load, and actually to hear from those who have done more than this in one quarter or semester. Kudos to you all! Thanks again, it means the world to me.
