Fall 2010 UCLA MECN applicants share your comments/concerns
congrats to all of you who've been admitted for the fall .... as far as Epi goes, i suggest contacting Student Affairs re: their suggestion. the suggestion that i received was to take it through the School of Nursing, so i did (and passed successfully). while i do know a couple of ppl who took and passed Epi 100, i do know that one person who was admitted to my cohort did not pass the online version, and could not enroll into the program as a result. from what i understand, the online version of Epi 100 is based solely on the grade that you receive on your final. you should really think about the risk that you are taking by relying on one grade--especially if epidemiology is new to you, and are unfamiliar with how the professor tests. i hope this is helpful to you... to the person who was admitted to the MECN program, but is considering declining so that you can apply to UCSF... my is that you enroll where you know you've been admitted. as you know, admission to nursing school is sooooooooooo competitive, and you are really gambling by waiting an entire year to apply somewhere else. half of your program would be complete at UCLA by the time you begin at UCSF--assuming you are admitted, of course. becoming an NP is still a possibility after the MECN program. you may need to work a year before applying to an NP program, but you can still realize that goal nonetheless. just really think about it before you tell UCLA "no thanks". i hope this is helpful to you as well... to everyone who wasn't admitted. be encouraged, and hold fast to your goals :redbeathe...

Did anyone apply to UCLA's MECN Program for Fall 2009?
You are understandably upset. But, to say I'm being "disingenuous" is unnecessary and inaccurate. Why don't you contact the school to find out why you were not admitted. I'm sure your ethnicity was not a factor at all. Best of luck to you...

trust me, the school (and the profession) can use a lot more diversity. however, UCLA cannot admit based on ethnicity. whether or not people were accepted had nothing to do with their race. i wouldn't start thinking along "ethnic" lines in trying to determine why you did or did not get in... the bottom line is that many people of ALL ethnicities are qualified to succeed in this program, but there are a limited amount of spots -- which absolutely sucks. knowing that the # of applicants to nursing school far exceed the # of available spots, i applied to every kind of program -- ADN, BSN, and MSN programs. i wanted to be a nurse, period. i believed that all of my future advanced practice and research goals were still possible once i became an RN. perhaps a good idea for everyone who has not been admitted is to broaden your options. County has an EXCELLENT program. their admissions process is solely based on your academic achievement. i honestly considered going there over UCLA due to the cost and the fact that it's a proven program. i thought long and hard about it, but my dad convinced me to get my Master's. thankfully, i ended up getting a scholarship for this year, so i didn't lose financially by choosing the path that I did. but, i would have been excited about becoming an RN regardless of the program... you will become a nurse with any of the degrees i mentioned. besides, there are ADN-MSN programs out there for ppl with other degrees as well. you'll reach your goals of becoming MSNs, PhDs, DNPs, whatever you want. to me, the key is to get into a program that is going to expand your thinking, develop your skills, and support you in your journey to becoming a nurse. we will all be new grads when we finish regardless of what program we come out of. i wish you all the very best, and hope that you enter into the program that is the best fit for you. congratulations to all who have been accepted to school in the fall. for those who have not been admitted yet, stay encouraged. your goals will be realized if you stay positive and determined...

our clinicals start in the spring with mental health. the summer is med surg I & ob; fall is med surg II & peds; winter is public health; spring is our immersion quarter. people in the program live all over -- from graduate housing, as far south as torrance, as far north/west as simi valley. due to the immense amount of content that is covered each ten weeks, coupled with all of the papers, many of us have wondered about the lack of hands-on patient contact right away. HOWEVER, both the original class & second year class have assured us that we'll be fine. by the time we hit the floor, we won't just know HOW to do a procedure; we'll know WHY we're doing it, and will be familiar with the evidence that backs it up. remember, we're training to become Clinical Nurse Leaders within a couple of years of when we graduate. knowing skills is only part of the CNL's competency -- being knowledgable of evidence-based protocols is equally important. as far a "typical day" -- hmmmm... good question. i'll let you know what that looks like when i have one :-)! j/k... seriously, it depends on what's going on in our classes that determines what the day/week will look like. the first quarter, we were in classes 4x/week -- VERY DRAINING!!!! this quarter we're in classes 3x/week and it makes a HUGE difference in the amount of time that we have to devote to studying and writing... okay, those are my two cents... BerryGood, i'll see you tomorrow :-)! happy studying... btw, we have TWO midterms tomorrow. yeah, it's a demanding program -- but incredibly worth the effort!

i'm beginning my RN program in the fall (the MECN program at UCLA). i'm just trying to get an idea of how New Grad programs work... is your program a full year? i recently heard that they're six months long.

Kathliz... if things don't work out for the fall, you may want to consider Mt. St. Mary's ADN program and the program at LA County College of Nursing. Both accept for the spring, and neither are lottery-based. LA County accepts based on a point system. I've also talked to people who got into College of the Canyon's Collaborative program right away. These are some other options for you. I'd hate to see you give up on your goals -- no matter what your age is... Be encouraged and stay your course :-).
