MATC (Milwaukee) RN Petition

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa. I've been a Certified Medical Assistant for 10 years and about 3 years ago decided to go back to school part time to get my RN. I finally finished all my pre-reqs and was able to petition for next semester. Of course my petition was denied because I wasn't lucky enough to win the lottery! After many phone calls and emails asking how they determine who gets in each semester, the answer I got was a "random lottery." I asked if someone that petitions 3 times will get in over someone petitioning for their first time.......NOPE! "They simply don't have the resources to determine how many times a student petitions!" BS!! I've done some investigating into other schools including, Gateway, WCTC, and Madison Area Technical College and they all base it on date of enrollment into the program. THAT makes sense! At least there is some kind of organization!

I emailed my findings to the Dean of Health Occupations at MATC a few days ago but have heard nothing back. If I hear nothing back by Monday, I am going to the Vice Pres. or President of the school. If I get nowhere with them, I go to the media. I'm sick of complaining about it and hearing other complaints from students in the same position I'm in. If there are other schools doing this same procedure in a more fair way, there's no reason MATC can't either! What else do they do in the 60 day window?!?

An instructor of my husband's from a different program told him that I have to go the top and that's what I intend to do. The squeeky wheel gets the grease right? MATC gave me another semester to be PO'd and I have plenty of time on my hands now!

If anyone else is interesed in forming an alliance with me let me know. We can do something about this for ourselves and others in the future. We need to stand up to this school.:lol_hitti

I have to petition again next month....it will be my 2nd time. Let's hope for the best!!

So I'm confused... You got denied then they accepted you shortly after??

The way the process is, they may reject you just for that term, you then petition again to try to get into the next semesters nursing classes. So you sometimes have to petition more than once. Congratulations on finally getting in and good luck! I'm going to be taking my core nursing classes at Waukesha County Technical College.

Attention ALL potential nursing students of MATC:

Anyone who is considering or thinking about trying to complete a nursing degree or petition at this college should BEWARE!!! According to Nancy Vrabek and Sue Chicks, good grades, high score on NLN, and hardwork do not matter because everyone is thrown into a lottery; 75% of students with a 3.0 OR below will most likely get accepted. The reason for this was giving everyone a fair chance. However the operative word in the sentence is fair! It is by no means fair when a smart, dedicated student with high grades is denied acceptance. Furthermore, after waiting the 60 days to hear if you got accepted or not, it is nearly too late to figure out another plan if you do not get in. Long story short, if you are a dedicated student who gets good grades.... take your business else where. MATC does not value its strong students. Hope this saves some people alot of time, aggrevation, and money. Good luck to all nursing students!! Hope this message helped.

I am currently taking my pre-req's there now. Just got done A&P 1 and Developmental Psychology, both with A's. I never planned to take my actual nursing courses here though, will be transferring to WCTC Fall 2011 for their nursing program. Its one of the best in the state and their Nclex pass rates for graduates is like 96%.

If you're going to MATC, I would take all your theory classes online. The instructors read from the powerpoints for 3 hours and then test you on the material in the powerpoints, readings from the text books or random things that you will have NO idea where they got them from.

My suggestion is to learn how to take their tests! You can review, memorize and really think you know a concept but because so many of the exams are poorly written by nurses and not people who have education or teaching degrees, you can do really poorly. Also, you REALLY have to know who to take otherwise you will get screwed!

has anyone taken the Pre-NLN Admission Exam test for practical nursing? im set to take it next week...do we need specific scores?!!? anyone with any information would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks again! =)

I have taken the NLN for RN. For this exam, the minimum score needed is a 100. However, for the PN I'm not sure if the score required is the same. The score is calculated on a point basis {how many questions are answered correctly, not a percentage. Good Luck on your test.
