  1. ASLMC has a lot of cardiac floors both step down and ICU, ortho, medsurg, neuro, and oncology. It is a very, very fast paced hospital to work in however, you will learn a lot. Try and figure out what your interests are then apply.

Thanks for your response! It makes a lot of sense and is encouraging to know that someone likes their job as a nurse. The hospital that I work at is very large and is respected from the outside community, however internal management, staffing and protocols need a severe overhaul. Thanks again for the response!

Hi- I've been working at a hospital in southern WI for the past few years. I'm very close to graduating as a RN however, I beginning have doubts about the nursing field. The stress, patients, MD's, family members and other problems that nursing deal with on a daily basis really seem to burn people out after while. I feel like nursing staff is a "shock absorber" for the patients and all the many complaints they have in a day. I disappoints me to see the lack of appreciation nurses get. I just want opinions- its this career worth it.... do the good days outweight the bad? I'm young and don't want to dread my job everyday. any comments are appreciated! Thanks!!
  4. I would definately STAY AWAY from matc. I've been there for 2 semesters of the nursing program and left because of the incompetence. I was hopefull that it would improve but it only got worse. The "instructors" are not teaching for the right reasons. Everything about the program is haphazard. I have since transfered and am much happier. Good luck with whatever you chose to do but in my honest opinion, MATC nursing is NOT worth the wait.
  5. No dean? wow! I'm surprised they can maintain accreditation! Kinda scary.... especially seeing the steep tuition rates!

Hi everyone, I was just offered a job at a hospital in milwaukee county. I'm excited because I know i would like the job and unit however the hospital is union. I have never worked for a union before so I'm unsure if this move would be wise. Any insight or comments would be great! Thanks!!
  7. Hi, I'm going to be starting my first semester in the RN program in Jan. I'm a bit apprehesive to begin because I have heard nothing but horrible things from co workers, classmates, and of course this website! Do you feel that they properly educate the students to become nurses? Is it worth is to stay in the program or look elsewhere for an RN program? I dont want to waste time and money if they screw their students!! thanks for any info!
  8. Hi there! I have also petitoned @ matc for spring 2011. However, I petitoned to the RN program. Unfortunately, this is my second time petioning. I was denied last semester. The lottery really does "screw" people who are in the upper percentiles. I hold a 3.9 GPA and scored a 134 on NLN and still did not make the cut. To be completely honest, the program is run way to disfunctionally and the staff { or much of the staff) are rude and complacent as to what is going on. I'm still awaiting a response for the spring, how about you? With my experience with the school and friend's experiences, I do not plan on staying at MATC either way. I wish you luck and I hope the LPN program is run much smoother!!
  9. Hi everyone, I'm looking for opinions on the nursing program at MATC in milwaukee. I have not heard good things and some of what I have experienced/observed was not great either. I'm waiting on the petiton I submitted earlier this month. Any current RN students~ how do you like the classes, teachers, clinicals and organization of the program? I'm considering transferring but would still like some feedback. Thanks:)
  10. I agree with you 100%. I work in a hospital as a CNA and, I would never would refer or let anyone else refer to me as an RN. I'm a junior in college for RN so I'm fully aware of the time and hard work it takes to earn the title RN. It is definately something that can just be thrown about. In, my opinion, people who refer to themselves with false titles must have an insecurity about their choices and career paths.
  11. No actually 2nd and 3rd shift ALWAYS have shift diffs. because it is considered an "off" shift. and contrary to the belief of many, there is plenty to do with patients on PM shift, at least in my hospital setting. Feeding, dressing, bathing, incontience care and much much more is done on 2 and 3rd shift. Plus remember, not all the patients sleep at a certain time...... which means call lights and pagers can off all night long. Never a dull moment!!
  12. Congrats on passing!! I work 2nd shift as a CNA in a hospital. Despite the fact of getting home very late, it is a good shift. It is a busy shift though~ more family members visit, many admissions of patients. The shift differential is also a plus. I'am more of a morning person so eventually I plan to work 1st. Second shift works well right now with my college schedule. All in all, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift will all be beneficial. You will learn a lot! good luck.
  13. As a CNA in SE Wisconsin @ a hospital, I make 11.66 per hour plus shift and weekend diffs.
  14. Hello, Regarding the MATC nursing program, I did petition once this past march and unfortunately I did not get it. It came as a shock to me because I was told if I met all of the requirements, I would have a spot in clinicals. I met and surpassed every requiremet and spent countless hours studying in order to keep a high GPA and NLN score. However, as I was told by the Dean of Nursing college Dr Nancy Vrabec, people with good grades, specifically over a 3.7 {like myself} are chosen by random {essentially out of a hat}!! Her reasoning for this was to give others a fair chance who do not have the best grades because they would not be given a chance anywhere else. I was extremely appauled by the way I was spoken to and how the program was actually run. I have since decided to discontinue my nursing at MATC. I did not want to petiton again because I know many people who petitoned 2-3 times and are still waiting!! I will be finishing my nursing school at a local University in Milwaukee. I'm very pleased with my current school. It is a shame that MATC is operated so disfunctionally because, the college is convient for many and of course much cheaper!! I wish you luck in your nursing studies.
  15. For the NLN RN, the test contained an English, Math and Science section. The english portion consisted of quite a few reading comprehension questions and the rest was vocab recognition. The math section was a lot of basic middle and high school math {addition, subtractions, decimals,} as well as college level algebra and a few geometry. The science was largely constructed of biology and evolutionary questions. However, chemistry, and a few A&P questions also appeared. There were also a few physics questions. In my opinion, this test seemed to parrallel the ACT. I'm not sure if the complexity or content differs at all with the NLN PN but for the most part I imagine the are similar.
