Hi all-

I received my BSN from in August, I am interested in pursuing nurse practitioner programs. I read somewhere that someone on AN had done their MSN through WGU and then applied to a post masters certificate program for nurse practitioner. I am wondering if there's anyone who can comment on this, or has done it and can give me some information. I'm interested in the process.

I checked out website, they offer a MSN program with an ADN or a diploma in nursing (LPN) I thought that if you have your MSN, you can start applying for Nurse Practioner jobs. Is that accurate? I am interested in getting my Masters to be a NP not sure on the steps I will need to take.

All NPs hold a MSN or DNP.

Not all MSNs and DNPs are NPs so make sure you attend an accredited NP program or plan on doing a post-MSN.

Thanks BostonNP. You are from my home town. I am born and raised in Boston. I migrated to Atlanta in the early 90's. I go home whenever I can though. What would be your advice for a post-MSN?

I don't have much experience with post-masters certificates. In my opinion if you want to be an NP, go straight through an NP program rather than a MSN + post-masters. I think in the long run it will be cheaper and quicker that way.

I don't have any specific information regarding post-Master's, but bear in mind that you will likely need to complete the "three P's" (patho, pharm, physical assessment) before entering a post-Master's for NP. I know that the old MSN program did not have these courses, but I'm not sure about the new MSN.

You will probably have more luck by contacting specific programs you're interested in to see what will be required.

They do have the 3 P's in the new MSN, I called and asked all these questions to their enrollment counselor. It takes two and a half years to complete either track, and you could possibly do np certificate post MSN afterwards but just wouldnt be a fit for me :)

I know one grad who attend SJCME for her FNP post MSN-ed.
