Seattle Central Community College Fall 2014

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I am really hoping that a current or former student can shed some light on SCCC nursing program.

Some specific things I am hoping to find out

Instructor reviews.. did you feel that the majority of the instructors taught fairly well and were supportive of the students.

Environment- Did you feel it was a good environment and you had the tools and resources you needed to get things done in lab and skills check offs

Administration- there seems to be a general consensus that SCCC has a horrible reputation in their normal college administration and administrative functions such as transcripts, records, cashier, losing important items and financial aid. Does this carryover into the program or do they seem to be organized and efficient?

Material: Did you find that the material prepared you well for graduation and NCLEX?

Student Nurses Organization: Is there one? Is there any kind of community health or outreach that the students participate in?

Thank you so much if anyone can answer some or all of these. I am trying to decide if I apply here for Fall or go somewhere else.

The information session was helpful, but there are still some unanswered questions and I would love to get an actual student or graduates perception of these things.

Husky,

There were 7 books in the email. They were:

Nursing Diagnosis Handbook by Ackley, 9th Edition

Fundamentals of Nursing by Craven, 7th Edition

Fundamentals of Nursing-Std.Gde by Craven, 7th Edition

Fundamentals of Nursing Proc.Checklist by Craven, 7th Edition

Taber's Cyclopedic Med.Dict, Indexed by Taber, 22nd Edition

Hardwiring Excellence by Studer, 3rd Edition

Communication in Nursing by Riley, 7th Edition

Is that the same as your list?

Maybe I am mixing the scrubs info from a different school lol I"ll try to send an email about it.

Oh, and not sure about which ATI books we're getting...

greenteame,

I was actually ordering books from the list found in the bookstore and these are the same books I ordered, so all is good :)

Unfortunately I don't know anything about scrubs, but I was wondering about the OSHA stuff on Complio... Cebrina wrote me an email saying that the Hazardous Cummunication information will be sent out soon and should be completed before orientation - but I still have not received anything, have you?

Also, has anyone gotten the flu shot yet? We will have them available at work on the 19th but I an a little afraid that it will be too close to the start of school and I won't have anough time to upload it on Complio, should I get it at Walgreen's sooner?

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Are you understanding the First Source email that Minza sent? I personally have almost everything approved like TB, vaccinations, and especially my physical, Im assuming many of you guys are jn the same boat.. I guess Im not understanding what we are supposed to do with the First Source and how we are supposed to reupload everything. Can anyone comment on this?

I did email Minza right now and will let you guys know if I find out anything. Thanks!

Nurseandmurse,

I haven't received the Hazard info yet either. Regarding flu shot, I was able to get that just a few days ago. I would ask Cebrina if you can wait or not. She seems good at getting back to emails in a timely manner.

Husky,

I had questions too about First Source. I haven't looked at it yet but Minza suggested to cross check info you've uploaded with info First Source is asking for. If there are missing items you haven't uploaded yet then re-upload it with First Source. Hopefully we won't have to upload too much additional info...

Husky2011,

From what I understood First Source is just a checklist that verifies that each document uploaded to Complio is a first source document (contains ID, DOS, must be legible, etc.). I am not planning on actually going through all of my uploaded documents and am just assuming that since they have been approved, they must be OK - since I've had some trouble getting some of my things approved, so I'm pretty sure that Complio has been using First Source guidelines, or similar ones, anyways.

In regards to OSHA, I emailed Cebrina and she wrote back that she is expecting Minza to send it over prior to our orientation on the 15th.

Hi all,

Today I received an email from Minza regarding certificates we must complete by Oct. 1st. I have a few questions:

1) I have gone through NAC training, and work at a hospital but never remember receiving a HIPAA certificate. Am I the only one? Do you guys all have these certificates? I was thinking that maybe they will have us do them on our orientation on Monday.

2) Were you able to access the Ergonomics certificate that we are supposed to fill out? I went on the website and there was nothing to fill out there, and on the checklist that Minza sent it says that the Ergonomics certificate is located "on the next page of this document" however my page 2 is a blank page.

Hopefully I will be able to answer my many questions during orientation on Monday :(

Thanks!

Hi nurseandmurse,

Im not sure of this but if you look at the email that Minza sent about the first source packet, there is a page about midway or so about ergonomics. On the page is a space for you to sign.. I think that is what the directions was talking about.

As for hipaa, Im in the same boat. I think there are websites where you can pay and do online training in one sitting, and then you would get a ceetificate at the end. But otherwise I would ask Minza about hipaa..

HA!

I cannot believe that I didn't even look past the first page on the First Source document lol :)

Now everything makes so much more sense - thank you.

Minza has been all over the place in my emails with her. She will give some people information, and then not others. I get a lot further when I talk with Cebrina. I even asked Minza for the book lists and if I could use the previous edition study guide, to which she responded "Ask the Dean at Orientation." I think because she is new, she doesn't have know a whole lot of the information we need. It's getting to be too last minute to order books for cheaper (ebay, etc) so I just went ahead and grabbed what was told to me by former ADN's in the program.

As far as scrubs, it's going to be about $100 I hear. You need this specific "Dove" brand and they aren't cheap. However, former students tend to sell theirs back, so there's always that option. I don't know how people who don't work can afford all of these last minute costs! And not getting us the list of materials in a timely manner has set us all back when we could have gotten cheaper books/scrubs/etc.

Hopefully the program is a little better organized.

Okay...done with my rant :) Who is down to set up a study group?? Is anyone traveling from Renton/Eastside and would maybe want to carpool?? Btw...my name is Kate :) What is everyone else's name? :)

Also, of course the day Orientation is, I get sick :( Can anyone fill me in on what went on? IE any new info we received? Cebrina says she will let the few of us that missed it make up the stuff we need to, I'm just curious about where to buy scrubs/extra things we need and anything else needed prior to 9/22.

Thanks!!!!

-Kate

In response to what the class is like... in addition to ChemStickPro...

1. Don't be the teacher's pet, let others answer.

2. This program is not organized, get used it it and don't complain about it--For those asking if you can work while in school, it's too hard to keep them updated with a working schedule when everything can change from one day to the next. Would recommend working as little as possible first quarter so that you can get a sense for what you personally can take on.

3. The teachers do want you to succeed. If you fail your first test, don't freak out, you will pass. This applies to every quarter. Remember the passing grade for this school is very high so don't get down on yourself.

4. Get to know others but make small study groups. It will allow you to focus instead of meeting up with a big group, which ends up becoming a big complain fest.

5. Don't wait to study. Find out what works for you and plan out ahead.

6. The same study method doesn't work out for all the quarters.

7. USE YOUR PLANNER. Professors will not remind you of due dates until last minute.

8. About clinicals... it will all depend on your clinical instructor. The scrubs suck. You will hate care plans. You won't get as much practice as you expect. Value the lab/practice time at the school, it will be the most practice you will get.

9. There is no homework. Only a few projects/group projects toward the end of the quarter. You need to be self-disciplined when it comes to studies. If it's not in the syllabus, don't do it.

10. You have plenty of time to have a life. Don't feel guilty, there is plenty of time to do everything.

11. It's not a clique, it's called making friends.

12. Everyone doesn't sleep with everyone! And if they do, no one cares. We are all here for much bigger goals.

13. At the end of quarter, we all go out. Celebrate! Who care who is the obnoxious drunk?! We've survived another quarter!

14. It will go a lot faster than you can ever imagine. Enjoy it and make life long friends.

15. Congrats and welcome to Seattle Central Nursing!
