Financial options for a young student?

U.S.A. Washington

I am a 23 year old aspiring nurse. I completed 2 years of pre-requisites in Florida, paid for by FAFSA, as a dependent of my parents (0 EFC), but I've lost all of their support. I am moving to Seattle (capitol hill area) soon to start a new life, and I want to know if there are any hospital programs that pay for a Student's education in exchange for work. I am looking for financial assistance, grants, or interest-free loans (religious reasons). If any fellow nurses have any information please respond. Thank you so much!

You will still qualify through fafsa, though I think you have to be 24 (or married, or have a child) in order to bypass needing your parents information. You may still qualify for pell grant and loans - but be careful with the loans.

And just out of curiosity, how are religion and interest free loans related?

One option that is available across the states is joining ROTC and pursuing a nursing degree at an university. There were a few classmates that did this and got tuition covered, books, housing, and a stipend. BUT- they woke at 5 am for their works on most days, had extra ROTC leadership classes to take on top of nursing classes and clinicals, and have to serve as nurse officer for an X amount of years(forgot how many). But you have to be really dedicated to serving military women and men as a nurse and there has to be passion to go thru so much rigor that free schooling isn't all it is. Good luck in what you decide!

Another thing you can do is become a Nurse's assistant and many employers will have some tuition assistance for you to complete your BSN, MSN, etc. (although be aware it won't necessarily be 100% tuition coverage and you would be on your own for housing)

Specializes in Nursey stuff.

I think OP may be a Muslim. I read somewhere that Islamic law prohibits Muslims from paying interest on any debt. I would think that this would infer that everything purchased would be in cash or you would pay off your credit card each month...living within your means, I guess.

Exactly! We live within our means, and it makes it a bit difficult taking into consideration the expenses of getting established in modern society.

Thanks everyone for the information! I found out that I am still eligible for FAFSA, so hopefully that can help me complete my RN in Washington state. Thank you =).

I decided to complete a CNA license in Florida before I move to Washington, so I can atleast find part time work and have a place to live. Haha! =).
