Why I hate DC

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Because my car got broken into in broad daylight! I hear my alarm going off and I walk outside and the suspect just casually jogs away like nothing even happened. No point in filing a police report. I'm a student, times are hard, and I really don't need to be worrying about my safty outside of my house. Will be graduating in may and I have a choice to either stay out here and work at Childrens or go home to Beautiful Los Angeles. And to think, I was actually considering staying!

Why deal with the potholes, crackheads, unpredictable weather, horrible traffic and narrow roads when I could be at home relaxing in the sun on the beach. DOES ANYONE ELSE HATE DC AS MUCH AS I DO?!?!

SORRY IF I OFFEND ANYONE. BEEN HERE FIVE YEARS: FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE IT WOULD GROW ON ME...UM...NOT!:angryfire

WOW - good to know about DC and Philadelphia - I might have to avoid those areas if I decide to travel on the east coast!!

Sorry about the car windows though!! I once tried to break into my own car as I was stupid and locked myself out, but was not able to get through the glass...Plus I was a bit embarrassed to be doing it in broad daylight at a major hospital!!

The good thing about DC is that the Metro goes so many places. My brother lived in Arlington and whenever I'd stay with him, I could just hope on the Metro and get anywhere I wanted. I never bothered to rent a car.

Sounds good mercy - would the metro be safe for a night shifter though??

I'm no fan of LA myself, but I really don't think it's necessary to trash the place. As far as SoCal being a "pit", I live in a beautiful area of coastal San Diego County and you are the first and probably only person who I will ever hear refer to this area as a pit. To each their own. We don't have room for you here anyway.

Well, I should have said "LA" instead of SoCal, San Diego is quite nice. And you're right, SD isn't a pit.

But my being critical of LA and calling it a Pit isn't any different than some of the things people have said about DC or Philly, back in the thread up. You're just the first to get defensive about it. I'm entitled to my opinion.

"To each their own" ...I agree totally.

--However---

"We don't have room for you hear anyway" ...There's a difference between giving your opinion of a city and a personal attack.

I'm sure it was just a knee jerk reaction so I'm cool with it. I've done the same.

Good luck to the OP with your decision whatever it is...(I think you said you already moved right?)

DC isn't so bad. In fact, I personally think aesthetically it's one of the most beautiful cities in the US. I think it's a must-see if you're a traveler looking to see the US. There are bad areas in any town over 1 mil.

NY, for example, is super safe and it's easy to avoid the bad areas as they are in the outer burrows.

Philly is experiencing what NY went thru before the revitalization, when the running joke about NY is that all visitors get mugged...so, give the people of that town some time to do some clean up. But it's called "the City of Neighborhoods" for a reason, and that's the best part of the town, visiting the residential areas outside of downtown. Real quaint, warm and beautiful in the summer.

As for DC, I'm going back in August and I can't wait!

Yes, you're entitled to your opinion. Who said you weren't? You gave it and I told you what I think of it.

I hardly launched a personal attack. I said there's not room for you here because there literally isn't. It wouldn't matter whether you love it here or not- where my little town is concerned I am very much anti-growth. It isn't meant as a judgment against anyone in particular, I just want them all to find another place to live.

I lived in DC in the Mount Pleasant/ Adams Morgan neighborhood for 6 years and it was the BEST! Every city has its "bad spots". I personally think that the suburbs of DC have more ctrime. More of my friends have had more issues out in the suburbs than in DC. I moved to Arlington because my husband needed to live in VA, but I miss DC. I take metro all the time and find it safe, and I work the night shift 7p-7a. DC has the best restaurants, bars, fun places to hang out. Places to eat are much better than in VA or MD, more cultural.

Okay my bad then. It didn't seem literal, I took it as "You're not welcome here anyway." My mistake. (Re-read your post and perhaps you can see why I thought that.) But I still contend that LA is a pit, cause IMO it is. :)

I'm cool... Thanks for clarifying.

hey folks-raised in DC-have lived here all my life-never have had my car broken into, many juristictions have red light cameras, and yes-we DO give speeding tickets here both to residents and non-residents. Check out the crime rates in surrounding counties. I walk everywhere including to some of my patient's homes.

My sister & BIL are Army officers stationed in the DC area - they live in Alexandria. When they moved there in summer 2001, they had a lot of problems. First, they considered putting my nephew in daycare at the Pentagon because it's just a short ride away - please note the "Pentagon" and "summer 2001". Needless to say, 9/11 changed their minds about that.

Then there's the two snipers going around randomly shooting at people. Charming.

They are still there, mainly because Alexandria isn't too bad and there's lots of work for them. If they go into DC they take the metro and don't go into creepy places. They also work on military bases, so there's awesome security. On one visit, we had a drunk trying to beg off of us once near Ford Theatre, but no muggers. But when they buy a house, it's going to be far far away, maybe Texas or Colorado.

FYI I live on Long Island, I've been to NYC enough to know it's pretty safe if you stick to certain areas and situations. But you always have to pay attention to what's going on around you. I've never had a problem, but I know people who've been mugged or attacked. And if you don't live in a doorman building, don't keep anything nice in your apartment because it'll get broke into. A lot.

I have to agree- every city has it's negatives.

My friend was in her last semester of nursing school at UMD in Baltimore. She and her husband kept waking up to dead people in their window well. No lie- stab victims, homeless people, you name it-- if it was dead or dying, it landed in their window well. After the first couple of times, they accepted that it was just their part of the city. :uhoh3:

this has got to be the best nurse from millers children hospital. from the best tech at millers. one love

I know this thread is long but I had to ask, When you say if you dont have a doorman building dont keep anything in nice in your apartment because itll get broke into . A lot, are you referring to DC, because I am from LI also was born and raised there lived in NYC for 6 years and know people that lived in Harlem and things was cool, never any breakin and they did not have a doorman unit, and this was off of 125th st even living in the Bronx up near the zoo never anything. I hope you are speaking about DC and not NY.

Also, I was reading through this thread and it reminded my alot about NY back in the 70's when crime was rappant, but as I read through other threads I could see the change in the area. You are correct or I do agree with in NY and I am sure DC you have to watch your back, I now live in the south and I hate it I am thinking about DC, but the south is so slow with different opportunities and the diversity or lack there of I am just not accustom to I loved NY because it was a melting pot full of people and things to do and experience, and it would be great to get that from working in the DC area, and maybe living in VA or the burbs of MD.
