Georgetown University Hospital - What's it like?

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious to know what its like to work at Georgetown University Hospital, aside from pay and benefits (although if you see fit, feel free to comment on those too). Do/did you enjoy the nurses you worked with, the doctors? What about the hours and conditions? What about the cafeteria (silly, I know, but valid!) I'm particularly interested in any information you have on the PICU, but would love to hear about all other areas as well. Thanks for your help! :yelclap:

How much do you get paid per hour Cristine?

I'm PRN so I make more than the average staff nurse. I believe staff starts around $27/hr with shift differentials for nights and weekends. You can also get incentive bonuses for agreeing to to overtime on certain units.

I am a UMB student, graduating in May of 2011. I have been working as a student patient care technician for over a year now at the Medical Center (magnet as well) in downtown Baltimore. I have a good gpa, above a 3.0. Although I enjoy working in Baltimore, I will have to relocate to Foggy Bottom, DC for family reasons after graduation.

Two questions:

1. Do you think I have a good chance of getting into the Georgetown New Grad Program?

2. Being optimistic, lets say I get into the program. Do you think I am wrong for leaving my current job for one that is closer to my new home? I have built such a good bond with my manager and I will hate to disappoint her.

Be as honest (and as brutal) as you can be. This dilemma might not even come to past, unless I get accepted:rolleyes: into the Georgetown program.

I don't really know what GUH looks at for the New grad program entirely. I know that the new grads I have seen on the Units are all BSN prepared, most from area schools (ie GUH, UMB, JHU)

I don't think you are wrong from wanting to see what else is out there. You should apply at your current facility in the event you don't get offered a position at GUH. In the event you do get into the new grad program at GUH have you considered what area you would like to work in?

My experience is in IMC Unit-Transplant. I would think that as a new grad it'd be best to pick a Med-Surg Unit. I really like my current transplant unit so it'd be nice to work in the same area if I get accepted into the GUH program.

My current manager has already offered me a position on her Unit. The plan is to do my senior practicum on that unit so I can get more acquainted with RN perspective before orientation.

I just feel really bad for looking at other hospitals.

Did you receive the application packets before or after your phone interviews? Before your invitation to new grad day?

Cristine - do you have any pointers for those of us who might go to new grad day? What should we expect? Any way to prepare for the interviews?

Does anyone have experience or has anyone heard about the georgetown picu? I have experience with both peds heme/onc and picu and I'm looking to get back to picu in the DC area. Honestly I've heard bad things about every picu in the dc/baltimore area (minus hopkins, that place just seems impossible to get into!). Any input regarding georgetown would be quite helpful, esp from experienced nurses, thanks!

As the mother (who happens to be an RN) of a frequent flyer of the GUH PICU/Transplant Unit, I think the staff nurses are great. They all do an exceptional job. We have been going there since 2006 and still see many of the same faces each time we are there.
