Applicants to GWU's ABSN 2011

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hi! Just wanted to start another thread relating to GW's accelerated nursing program. Is anyone applying? They extended the deadline to March 1st and wondering if there weren't many applicants or they just allowed for more time? I'm sending mine in this weekend and am excited!

Hi dlrosen, congrats again. I think you are the only so far here who got the notification. I also applied to Shenandoah and George Mason. I got accepted into Shenandoah a couple of weeks ago. It is private like GWU. I would prefer GMU because it is state school( cheaper!) and closer to my house.

But GMU takes really long time to let people know about their application. Probably end of April or even first week of May.

In any case, I would love to hear from anybody about GWU's second degree program. I haven't seen their NCLEX passing rates . I know they are relatively new but I think they should have some graduates by now.

Good luck eveybody!

Ditto, bokerglory. I'd really like to hear more about people's experiences as well. I'm thinking about visiting the campus during my spring break at work (third week of march) to not only see the campus, but determine commute time, speak to students, and faculty. Not sure yet though, as I'm looking at flights and it's not cheap. =( If anyone hears anything, please post!

Hi DlRosen,

I can't figure out how to private message you, but I am curious who you made the decision on GWU versus your other schools. As I wait for my decisions to come back I am trying to prioritize them and was interested in how other ABSN students were choosing.

Thanks!

You will be able to send private messages once you have 15 posts.

Hi NYC,

I know exactly what you mean. I actually haven't made any final decisions yet, as I am still waiting for others. I just decided to send in my deposit to hold my spot. While GWU is a GREAT school, I don't want to jump on the wagon ... just yet. I'd prefer to stay in California and would prefer to get into a Master's Entry program. That being said, however, I'm finding it difficult to turn my back on great schools as GWU and Catholic, even if they are just the AccBSN programs. Chances are, afterwards, I'd apply for their master's program, especially since the last 12 units at GWU go towards the Master's program anyway.

I am looking at NCLEX pass rates, affiliations of hospitals (as that would help me determine the type of population I'd be working with), job prospects, since we will be "networking" (most likely) during our clinicals, as well as overall price and length of program. Most of the schools I applied too are comparable, with an exception of a couple. It's difficult, but I'm not overlooking the fact that I'm blessed to even say I have options... just a few months ago, I was desperately praying to get into ONE. I first heard from Creighton University in Omaha (another great school) and thought that was going to be my new "home" in the next year. Now that isn't so true. =)

I will also say that now that I am researching more about GWU's program, I can't help but get more excited. The clinical sites look pretty amazing, the staff so far have been nothing but great, prompt, and organized, and I have family nearby (as an added bonus). Plus living in another state is a little exciting, since all I know so far is California. I just wish I could get in contact with someone who either is in the program currently or has already graduated to hear about their experience. Maybe I'll call on Monday to see if I can talk to someone and I'll post here...

Kinda a lengthy response (sorry)!

Hi dlrosen, kudos to you for researching GWU's program. I know you are in CA, so probably you did not have a chance to visit their campus. I visited their campus last spring in Ashburn. Their ASDN program in their new campus, suburban part of the VA which is I think better than going to DC. Traffic can be nightmare in DC. Anyhow, I really liked their new facilities and labs. Plus, their small sized classes I think it is a plus. But still don't know much about their graduates and NCLEX rates.

It will be nice to hear whether I got in or not eventhough I got accepted to Shenandoah Uni. I am leaning towards either GMU or GWU.

My husband is from Bay area and we lived in CA for six years, so I can relate to your big decision to move to east coast. I am pretty much tied down to this area because of the family. Good luck and let's update this thread if we hear anything GWU's program!

Hi Bokerglory,

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it, especially since you are right ... It's hard for me to go out there "just to visit" the campuses. My family, boyfriend and I are actually from the Bay Area as well! I relocated to Sacramento for grad school and work, but now that I'm taking on a new career path, it is really hard to leave all that. But like I said, I have family in VA, so its not terrible. =) I did spend about three months out in DC for my undergrad and LOVED it.. but it was so short term and I knew I was coming back to CA right away. This is a little different, so I really appreciate your feedback on the area. =)

I will call GW tomorrow to see if I can find out about NCLEX pass rates and graduation rates, in addition to trying to get in contact with someone in the program. I'm thinking they will be a little hesitant on the latter, but it's worth a try. =) I'll definitely let you guys know what I find out.

I wish you all the best, Bokerglory, and I'm really hoping GW for you. It'd be nice to know someone at the start of program! Actually, that goes for everyone on this site. Everyone has been so helpful! Thanks! We'll keep posting. =)

Hi! I applied to GWU as well! I emailed and was told that they are reviewing applications and that they should send out all notifications before May 1. Hopefully we will all hear back before then though! All of the waiting is tough!!

Does any body know how many applicants they had total? And how many spots they have?

I just received an email stating that my application is "under review". I'm not totally sure what that means. Has anyone else received this email?

@dlrosen: Do you remember receiving this email and if so, do you remember how long it was until you heard back regarding your decision?

Thanks!!

Hi, I also received the same e-mail and was wondering the same thing. I guess , they are officially starting to review applications. Hopefully it won't be too long. Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I did receive that same email. I got the review email on January 12th, and received another email on February 23rd saying that the decision was available online. =) Good luck and keep us posted!

I also called GW today to ask about statistics and here are the numbers (these are just the numbers from last year since it was the first year they started the program under the School of Nursing):

There were 20 students in last years cohort. 17 Graduated.

Out of the 17, 15 so far have reported passing the NCLEX. They are still waiting to hear from the last two students on their results. Keep in mind that people decide to take the NCLEX at different times, hence the gap in time from graduation to now. Pretty good numbers, not terrible, and nothing that is different from other programs.. pretty comparable. =)

I also asked to talk to a student who recently graduated or is currently in the program and someone is supposed to get in contact with me soon, so I can ask them any questions. Let me know if you have pressing questions you would like me to ask and I can report back. Hopefully I hear from someone soon. =)

Dlrosen: I remember you from the Western U forum! I just got an email from GWU that said my information is under review by the commitee and I sent in some more supp. stuff. I was wondering if you had heard back from SMU or Western? I got in at SMU and I was waitlisted for Rush. I hope to hear back from all schools by May so I can make some time to move!
