What about practical nursing programs??

My husband I are hoping to get stationed in Virginia. Just in case I don't get into a BSN or ADN program does anyone know anything about the practical nursing programs that are sponsored (hope that's the right term) high schools?

I'm looking at the list of practical nursing programs approved by the Virginia board of Nursing. They go through the high schools but you can be an "adult" and still apply. Anyone know any about these programs? Does anyone know if these programs can be used to do a LPN to RN bridge program? I'm really trying to get a grasp on my options so I can apply for programs as soon as we know we're going to VA. Any opinions you have on these programs would be great.

I don't know where in VA you're going, but I'm in Hampton Roads and I know about some of the programs around here! Adults can apply to them and they're usually about 18 months and they all start in August (application deadline is May for most of them). About half way through the program you're eligible to take the CNA test or you can most on for the last nine months and then be eligible for the PN test. Most of the ones around here are NLN accredited and should bridge to an RN program - but it really depends on the RN school you're interested in. TCC (the community college here) has a LPN bridge program and gives preference to those that got their LPN from the regional vocational schools here. They're all great options - for me, the downsides are that they're 18 months long and they only start in August. If you want to be an LPN, then that's great. If you want to get your RN, I'd rather devote that time to getting prereqs for applying the RN program. Good luck! I hope that helped!

If you go to the VA Board of Nursing they have a list of all the schools approved to operate in VA. In the Hampton Roads area they range from 12-18 months, depending on where you go. The price ranges from about $3500 and up to as much as 30k. Know that if you pick a proprietor school you will pay more money because they are in business to educate, but ultimately to make money. Many of the vocational high schools offer night/evening programs for CNA. One here in my area has a 4-month CNA program (classes meet 1-2 times a week) for a total tuition of about $600. Many of the public schools also offer LPN preparation programs (I googled several, and tuition is about $2-3K).

You can find a list of all LPN programs at the Virginia Board of Nursing (educational programs). They also post the NCLEX pass rates.

i live in richmond and went to a "technical" school that combined classes at the community college and at the tech school. both adults and high schoolers attended the "tech" school for all different types of trades.

then, once you graduated from the LPN program thru the community collge, you could apply for the LPN to RN program with that same community college.

I was going to school at petersburg high I hated it. All high school based school have you doing extra things outside of school like selling hot dogs when you should be studying and also you will be resentful when you see your other classmates going to school for free and playing around while you bust your hump to make the payments. I'm not saying don't try it because to each their own but for me I have to deal with teenagers at home so I sure as heck did not like what was going on at school. I wrote a post about my problem in other post called "was I wrong honestly" read it than make up your own mind if you have any question PM me.

The High schools in this part of va cost $5,100 + and payments cost between $500 to 600 every 6 to 8 wks. all out of your pocket.
