UVA CNL May 2011 applicants

Hi,

Is there anyone else out there who applied/ is currently applying to the UVa direct entry MSN CNL program? I would love to find other members so that we can go through this process together. I'm excited to hear from other applicants! Good luck!

Hi Kathleen,

It's so great to hear from you! How have you been? Which unit are you currently working in? Please let us know what you've been up to!

For everyone else on this forum, Kathleen graduated from the CNL program last year and was nice enough to give me a tour of the school. I'm sure everyone is curious to get an insider's perspective into the program!

I was actually wondering about how difficult it was to get a job upon graduating from the program? What kinds of shifts are you working? Did you find the program has prepared you for working as an RN?

Thanks!

Because you are graduating in May, you'll have more opportunities outside of UVA than we did being August graduates. Most everyone that applied to UVA got a job there (maybe not your choice unit...but somewhere close). Some got jobs out of state. The new graduate jobs are slim nationally. At UVA, I think there were like 400 applicants for 60 positions.... many came from out-of-state b/c there were no jobs.

I strongly suggest you ask for a practicum assignment (your last 2 semesters) in the specialty that you are interested in working. Particularly if you are interested in staying at UVA... it helps to know the staff and managers. They can see how you work and how you'll fit into the unit.

The CNL program is still new and they are still working out some bugs. The CNL certificate is still a controversy in the field. The MSN will give you an edge over most applicants. If you decide to get CNL certified, that will likely help you in the distant future (when you are a higher level clinician). Some units will reimburse you for it... some won't.

As for me....I'm in the STBICU. Love it! It's a hard unit (I didn't pick it b/c it was easy :)) Its been a steep learning curve... but I'm in my happy place :D

Good luck with everything! Look forward to seeing you floating around the hospital :)

Hello and congrats to those that got accepted for this May!

I am applying for the May 2012 cohort. Can anyone tell me what their stats are for the accepted students? Like GRE scores, GPA, whether you had any pre reqs in progress when accepted???

Thanks!!

My family and I are relocating to the beautiful Charlottesville area and are flying out next month to look around and I definitely want to take a tour of UVA when we're there:)

Michelle

I had GPA 3.75 for B.A. and GPA 4.0 for the nurse pre reqs. I highly recommend completing pre reqs before applying for the admission. Of course you don't have to.

Thanks!

I majored in Molecular Cellular Developmental Biology and Psychology for undergrad. Compared to others, I imagine my overall GPA of a 3.4 is low, however I had 4 years filled with hefty course loads and difficult classes ( I'm looking at you Organic Chemistry and Cell Bio!). I was very involved with research all 4 years and spent my summers in my cognitive development lab or on internships at a neighboring school and I completed an honors thesis during my senior year. I didn't have to take the GRE due to my GPA, but I'm sure having a competitive score would help with admissions. I had already completed stats and developmental psych, however I was in the process of taking A&P 2 when I applied and I am currently taking A&P 1 now. So, even though my current prereq GPA is a 4.0, at the time, they only had 2 classes to judge from. I actually think it has worked out well to be taking these classes before school starts because it's still fresh in my brain.

I'm so glad you're applying to the program! I've heard such wonderful things about it. When are you coming to Cville? You should definitely walk around the grounds and check out the town. If you need any help or advice, I'm a local so I could definitely help you out.

Congrats all who got in! I got wait-listed at UVA but I got into the GEM program at Rush University Medical Center. I'm set and thrilled with going to Rush University, and I wish everyone the best at UVA and their future endeavors!! :nurse:

Thanks Meg!! I'm thinking I'm not as competitive as alot of the other applicants, but I am still going to apply. I'd be curious to know what the others backgrounds are that are in your class. If you'd rather share via PM that would be cool!

I'm looking at either relocating my family to C'ville or surrounding area or Chapel Hill, NC....

Thanks so much for your offer at info on the area of c'ville:)

Hey Meg,

I am interested in applying to UVA's direct nursing program for next year. I found this thread and saw that you and I have similar backgrounds and interests. Would you mind sharing some more of your stats so I have an idea of what a successful candidate looks like?

Many thanks!

Amy

Hi AmyB,

I just sent you a pm with my e-mail address so that we can chat. I'd be more than happy to talk to you and answer any questions you have. I would love to hear about your background as well.

Hey fellow UVA CNL Class of 2013 students,

Is anyone interested in making a Facebook group? I would love to start "meeting" everyone... is it weird that I'm getting very excited to start school in May?

To those applicants with B.A background instead of B.S. YOu might need complete Chem 1 & 2 and Stats before applying for the program. It definitely increases your chance; and I had B.A in English and was questioned about the science background during the interview.
