Okay everyone, a position just opened in Oncology at my place of employment, but it's night shift!!!! When I was first hired I worked night shift, but I didn't like it. I did it for 3 months and just couldn't adjust....Now this position has appeared and I would love to get into Oncology, but I'm not sure about the hours...This is a very hard unit to get into b/c nobody everrrrrr leaves..

What should I do? Any night shift tips???

Tough choice! My first instinct would say to go ahead and apply and interview; if you're offered the job, then there's a real choice to be made. Good luck, whatever you decide!! :)

I work nights (1900-0730ish) on a tele unit. Their are good and bad things of working nights:

BAD:

- See to loose more time on ur days off, as one sleeps more

- Head seems to be in the 'clouds" on ur days off, i.e. what day is it! lol

- Some people have a hard tiem adjusting to sleeping during the day! I find I can only sleep like 4 hrs after a shift, then my body wants to get going! Then if I'm working that night, I really tend to drag butt at times, lol Even more so if one is doing 3 in a row!

- Friends most likely work days, so you don't get to see them as much

GOOD:

- Shift differential pay

- Fewer Doctors!!

- Fewer patient families around!!

- I like our day crew, but I think our night crew rocks! With less people around, one tends to bond a bite better with them.

- Pace at nights ca be a bit slower, but thats not always the case. My 12 hr shifts zoom on by. Always something to do.

Am I always going to work nights?? Probably not, wife would much prefer i work days. Some days she walks in the door, see each other for a bit, then I'm out the door!

I agree. Apply and get the job first, then you can decide at that point what is your best option.

Right now your only option is if you should apply for it, and there's really no reason not to.

Please let me know what you decide. If you decide the night shift, please let me know if you like it. I hope to work the night shift one day.

Thanks.

Hi 2bTraumaRN2008,

I received your message. Thanks, I just submitted my application for that position and for the night shift position in Pulmonary at Valley Health in Winchester. What is your shift like? What time do you have to leave your house to get to work on time?

Thanks for all the help, :yeah:

I wish you could send me a private message with your name b/c my director is also the pulm director, and....I know the manager in pulm as well...my unit is a sister unit to pulm, so we float over there sometimes to help and vice versa...I am on the same floor as oncology and pulmonary..

I work all days 7a-7p...I love it...days are busy, but the time flies by..I leave at 0525 and get to work at approx 0625...but I have a nice straight drive..
