Nova- anyone had luck with taking Micro & A&P together?

Hello! I'm trying to get into Nova's nursing program, but I'm not sold on it, and I'm not sure if we're going to stay in the area for the full 3 years it'll take me to get through the program. I'm thinking about taking their A&P I and II plus Micro track rather than their NAS track, since those NAS credits don't seem to transfer. My problem is the year of pre-reqs to take micro- I have 104 college credits and am so close to a Bachelor's degree. I'm not sure I want to add another semester on before I can even apply to an associate's program.

Even if I stay local, I'm contemplating transferring over to Marymount, Trinity or Shenandoah. So, the question is- has anyone had luck getting division approval to take Microbiology at the same time as A&P II? Most schools don't require both A&P classes as a pre-req, and it says you can get division approval to take it.

I could take it over the summer after completing both A&P classes, but then I can't get admitted to the fall nursing program. I'm not sure what I'd do with that extra semester. I'm pretty much done with anything I can take before being admitted to the program.

I just don't want to put all my eggs in the Nova basket or risk having to start over totally with pre-reqs. Thanks for any ideas!

I'm curious to see responses as well. I don't mind taking A&P first-it's the one year of chemistry (or any chemistry) that would delay me.

I think it's suicide. Taking a & p alone is enough to deal with. Microbiology is intense too. They both have labs and it would be your entire life until finals. Its a lot to learn, memorize and actually remember because you have to know this stuff for school and to be a nurse. You dont want to cram both courses in one semester because you might not retain all that information at once. You will be quicker to forget, I think. But if you ONLY take those two classes, and have all the time in the world to do nothing but study study study.... then more power to ya. Good luck! I took micro all by itself one semester and it was still a lot for me.

I did some research and you can take both A&P classes online as 8 week sessions, so in one semester, then Micro the next. I'm still not sure about micro approval without chemistry, but Nova does take the Chem CLEP as 8 hours (1 year) so it's doable. Probably extremely difficult, but possible! If you do that, I wouldn't take anything else. I am a SAHM, so I think I might go for it.

Or you can take Micro online. It looks like CConline has a micro class designed specifically for health majors. And EDUKAN has online micro too.

I'm going to email the bio department and see if they waive the chem pre reqs for pre nursing students, and also find out if the online micro class would transfer. I'll let you know.

AliF- I think that's BIO 150. I think NOVA just started offering that at Annandale this fall. I wonder if that will start satisfying the micro pre-req.

here's what the bio department said. i'm hoping then nursing program is going to start accepting bio 150. i'm going to ask that today.

"the biology department sets the pre-reqs for the bio 205 course, so they are the ones that determine if a pre-req can be waived. currently, they are allowing some students (depending on academic history) to take the bio 205 with 1 semester of chemistry, but a student must have a least 2 semesters of college bio and 1 semester of college chm to get in. in the future, we have heard that they will be more stringent on waiving any portion of the chm for the bio 205 because they have just opened up a lower level microbiology course, bio 150. this course, however, has not yet been approved for acceptance by our nursing program. so, to date, a nova nursing student can take nas 161/162 (which as you mentioned is not transferrable) or bio 141/142/205 (which would also include at least one semester of college chm)."

Just got off the phone with both Student Services and the nursing department. They might approve it, but we just don't know yet. It sounds like they are going to, but they weren't able to give me an idea of when or if it's definitely happening.

I'm think going to roll the dice- I guess if NOVA winds up not taking it, then I will just have to apply at other nursing schools once I'm done with my pre-reqs.

currently, [nova is] allowing some students (depending on academic history) to take the bio 205 with 1 semester of chemistry, but a student must have a least 2 semesters of college bio and 1 semester of college chm to get in.

hi! just wanted to share my experience. even though nova has "strict" prereqs set for certain classes, and a trip to admissions and a visit with a counselor could get some of your prereqs to the classes waived so you can enroll in the upper level class.

i went to visit admissions last week, and the counselor i spoke with enrolled me in microbio bio 205 with only 1 semester of college biology and 1 semester of chemistry. she told me that nova sets most of the prereqs for students right out of high school.. so if you already have some type of college degree (i have a bs in business), they will be more lenient with letting you into the upper level classes. she basically just glanced at my undergrad transcript, asked me if she thought i could handle it, and then waived all the prereqs on her computer and enrolled me in bio 205. i also got a 5 on the bio ap exam back in high school so i'm not sure if that also factored into her letting me in.. but that was taken 4 years ago so i don't think it did. i didn't want to question her too much in case she revoked my enrollment :o

Hi! So I was curious if you ever got into micro with only 1 semester of chem? I am in that boat right now to get into micro this summer.
