really?. You do get a letter grade for the semester right? how are clinicals graded?

Eep :imbar Sorry about confusing you! By paperwork, I meant care plans, case studies, teaching plans--that sort of stuff.

You do get a letter grade for each class: that's determined by the tests, quizzes, and any assignments that the instructor tells you will be worth points towards your final grade

Clinicals are graded satisfactory/unsatisifactory. This includes the clinicals at the hospital, practicums, care plans, teaching plans and most of the other paperwork.

Be aware that if you fail the clinical part of class, you will fail the entire course regardless of how you're doing on the written tests. So if you're having any struggles with clinicals at all, see your instructors ASAP so they can help you.

I have a really close friend that works with me and she is in cohort 1 and I start in cohort 4 i have a question about fundamentals of nursing is there any tips on taking notes cause she has told me there is no time to time notes and they really don't tell you what's on the test so how do you know how know what's on the test. She is a little overwhelmed she is a brand new mother with twin boys and still try to work from 3p-10p because she can't afford to do 20 hrs or less. she is a single mother.

Oh yes, and this is for all the incoming students:

Providing they haven't changed things...you will have an opportunity to earn extra credit by doing volunteer visiting at a nursing home. I strongly suggest you sign up for it. It only takes 8 hours across the entire course, you get to choose which nursing home you want to visit from their list, all you do there is visit an elderly person (no nursing duties involved, though it's a great chance to practice therapeutic communication), you can visit whenever you want (days, nights, weekends) and the only thing you have to do at the end is stand up and talk about it to your classmates for a minute or so at the potluck lunch during your last week :)

It's 15 points towards your final grade for 108...and for quite a few students, those extra points have pulled their chestnuts from the fire. But you can only sign up at the start of the class--if you don't do it then, you can't join later on.

What I did (and still do) is take the syllabus they give you, look at the objectives on the syllabus, and try to answer all those objectives using the book and the notes. That's how I study and it hasn't let me down yet ;)

I also use the book's website and CD and answer all the NCLEX review questions on there, because those questions are the style of questions that will be on the test.

Thanks so much I will pass that information along to my friend as well as use it myself.

okay, so what can get you an unsat in clinicals? I've been an LPN for a while and since I've started a new job, I've been trying to do things a bit more by the book. Trying to picture a clinical instructor watching me do trach care, tube feeds etc. I've heard stories of LPNs failing clinicals because of over confidence and don't want to fall into that trap.

I've never personally seen anyone get an unsatisfactory in Clinicals. I've heard that it usually only occurs if your actions pose a danger to yourself or your patient. Some do well in 108 and get above average marks, but after that, usually all 2's. Just walk into the environment with a clean slate, like you don't know anything. You'll do well.

My3GuysinVA, how students in each class? I was in cohort 2 but changed to Cohort 4 to fulfill all my pre-reqs. I'm thinking if I'm making the right decision to go to TCC Nursing program. Do you think TCC is one of the best nursing school in our area? I heard so much horror stories about Norfolk State program. Decisions... Decisions!

Did you mean to ask how many students per class? If so, it can depend. On average, you'll start out with around 30 per Cohort. We're down to 19. Actually, it was 17, but we picked up some new classmates from Cohort 6 who are retaking the course. I think the TCC program is good, but it can be overwhelming and frustrating at times. That's subjective though...:wink2:

I run into students from ODU and it seems they have a good program. It's a BSN though, and that just wasn't compatible for me with 2 kids. Too much time! Sentara seems to be a solid program as well, but you only come out of it with a diploma, rather than an Assoc. in Nursing, which you can then build on to reach the BSN level. I don't know about NSU. I am happy that I chose TCC. There are good teachers and not so hot teachers but if you put alot into the program, you will get a good return. I spent a little over a year banging out my prereqs, and only 3 NUR classes thus far, but I do love this experience and my future career. Besides, it pays WAY better than my last job as a Chef!

Personally, I haven't had a bad experience with a Prof. yet. Be respectful, don't complain, don't rock the boat unnecessarily, but don't be a wallflower either :D.

You can always approach the staff for help.

:yeah:

OOps! That's what I meant! Why were you down to 17? What happened to the rest? Also, I just took my CPR training again and got my card. Should I send them just a copy of the card? Thanks for replying... You have been very helpful to us in clarifying everything we need to know :yeah::yeah:

Well, we lost several in the first couple of weeks of 108 because Nursing was either not for them or school was incompatible with their life. Since then, we've lost the others as a result of not passing classes. 3 in this class that we had over the summer, 170. It's really hard. At first, you don't know anybody, so it doesn't make an enormous impact. Then you get close to folks and it's like losing a family member.

Definitely get them a copy of your CPR. And your nursing insurance certificate, when you get it. Just a COPY though

Sounds hard. I'm quiting my work because of this. I've been with them for almost 6 years, hoping that I am making the right decision.

So basically, you only have 1 class per 8 weeks, am I correct?

Also, can you re apply to TCC after dismissal?
