Anyone live in Newport News?

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hello there,

My husband is in medical school and I am currently a student nurse looking to graduate next year. My husband has been interested in doing a residency in Newport News and I am wondering what the area is like and good places to live for children, etc., including good places to work. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it.

Hi,

I am a nurse living in California. I am from Virginia and am moving back home in the next few months. Newport News is okay but you may want to look into Yorktown, VA. It borders Newport News and has an excellant school system.

Good luck.

How far is Yorktown. I guess I don't know anything about the area at all. I am originally from Idaho and my husband moved me to West Virginia for him to go to medical school and now he is close to residencies and I have a 7-year-old in grade school and also looking for daycare for my 22-month-old. When you say okay is it mainly not a good area to raise children, busy, not so busy? If you don't mind me asking could you give me more information. - Thanks

Newport News if fairy a bad area better known as Bad News I live in chesapeake.

Is it mostly due to violence? How far is Chesapeake?

Specializes in Primary Care, L&D, Med-Surg.

The Hampton Roads kind of merges all together, so Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News and Hampton are all within 10-30 minutes of each other. I worked at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, am currently attending nursing school in Hampton, and live in Yorktown, and usually get to anywhere I want to go within 20 minutes. The school system in York County is considered one of the best in the area, which is where my children currently attend. Some of the apartments and houses are on the pricey side. We rented an apartment a year ago in Yorktown for around $1200/month, but we also had to take what we could get in a 3BDR because we arrived not too long after Hurricane Isabel. There are some others that are more reasonably priced. As far as crime goes, I'd say Newport News is average, and that it has areas that are seedier than others, but overall the area is fairly pleasant. As far as Yorktown, not much in the way of crime goes on and it is very family oriented. Good Luck!

Chesapeake is probably about 45 minutes to an hour from Newport News.

I was working as a technician in one of the hospitals in NNews. I was a single parent. I moved there with a (2) yr old. I made a mistake in moving there. Perhaps it will be okay for you since you are coming with your family in place. I was there during the Gulf War approx 1990. All of the men left the penninsula. I had a hard time getting a date. I was in my 20's and very interested in meeting someone since her father, who was a dr. abandoned us. I did not like the staff that I had to work with. I found the place to be very repressive, but it is all relative to what you are used to. I remember saying how much I hated being there all the time. The day that my (18) month commitment was finished I turned in my resignation. The Southern Baptist churches were really good there. The daycare was horrible there. I finally got a friend's sister to keep my daughter.

One of the worst things about NNews are the ice storms. The ice lays on the overhanging electric lines for days in the winter. Most of the apartments were heated with electric so we were without electric for days. I remember being colder there than in PA. When the ice storms come everyone used to rush to the grocery store and buy all the water. The shelves were bare.

The natives really seem to like NNews. I am happy to be gone from NNews. I live in Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX now and I love it!

I find living in the Hampton Roads area to be what you make of it. Yes, the ice storms are horrible..... Just lived through a tough one, what was thought to be only a threat of a dusting ended up with as much as 13 inches in some areas of cold cold cold white snow on top of a sheet of ice. Good news is that now 4 days later, it has all melted away. The Hampton Roads area does have a lot to offer. There is alot of water ways to deal with, but if your a beach bum you'll be in heaven. The Yorktown area is one of the nices places to raise a family. I live in Hampton and most of my friends live in the Yorktown/York County area. Yes, the schools are said to be better and there is less city congestion. Like already mentioned, there are alot of hospitals in the region. I work week-ends as a float nurse for Riverside Regional Medical Center-totally love it there. And during the week as a Case Manager in Public Health. Good Luck.

My husband and I just visited Newport News this holiday and the residency program is actually at Riverside Regional and that is where we looked mainly. It looked fairly decent and we were taken on tours of the city, but basically a five-mile radius of the hospital as that is where they say to live in doing a residency. Is Riverside a good hospital in terms of nursing and how is that part of the area for living, crime, day care, overall enjoying it, etc.?

I really enjoy being a part of the Riverside family. I was fortunate to have some of my clinicals there while I was in Nursing School. I accepted a position there straight out of school and found they had a very supportive preceptorship for new nurses which I found vital being a new grad. I worked for them for almost 2 years full time before transfering to their in-house staffing agency. Riverside is one of the few hospitals that does not utilize agency nurses from the out-side. They once did, but administration listened to their employees (staff nurses) and only utilize Riverside employees (in-house agency) which in turn was able to increase the salaries of their nurses. The area with in a five-mile radius is relatively a safe community. However, I would try to stay away from the area going south on Jefferson. There you will find some strip joints and some hotels that tend to have more resident stays then 1 or 2 night vacationers if you know what I mean. J.Clyde Morris and Warwick Blvd within the 5 miles radius tends to be fine. Crime seems to be higher in the Down Town Newport News area or occassionally Denbigh area. You know when you're close to Down Town when you can see the Ship Yard cranes and the street names of course turn into numbers instead of names. Riverside Hospital has an in house day care center and you can always contact social services for a list of State Licensed Home day care providers in the area. Christopher Newport University is about 1 mile away and offers plenty of opportunity for outtings in their Arts Center. Christopher Newport University is where I received my BSN, however since then they no longer offer a nursing program. Such a shame. :o Overall, I have enjoyed my nursing career at Riverside and can't imagine myself staff nursing anywhere else. :)
