Hello, I am going to be graduating from nursing school in a couple months, and I'm trying to decide what area of nursing to go into. I plan on getting a year of experience at the hospital where I currently work, and then I'd like to do some traveling.

My question is, is it hard to find travel nurse jobs with certain specialties? or example, if I went into pediatric ER, would it be hard to find a travel job? I'm really interested in working in this area of nursing, but if it's hard to travel with that specialty maybe I'll consider something else! Any input would be appreciated, thanks!!!!!:balloons:

Hi!

I'd suggest that you call a few travel agencies and ask them where their top demand is. Recently I did this because I am thinking about traveling in the future but have been in a clinic setting. I need to get back into an acute care setting for a year or so first. The top needs of the agencies I polled were (in descending order) ICU, CCU, Telemetry, ER, Med-Surg.

I've heard it again and again from travel nurses and former travel nurses: all critical areas are in demand (ICU, MICU, SICU, CTICU, CICU, PICU, NICU, etc).

I also heard from a recruiter that psych travel nurses are very difficult to find because of the shortage.

And then there is the ever essential, tele / med/surg Nurse ;)

seems to be wherever you go to work they are building new telemetry floors. eventually more and more patients will be monitored, even if its surgery or other procedures that they come in with.

If you do go into a specialty such as pediatric ER, one year of experience will not be enough. You can travel with a year of med-surg experience with no problems. I don't know this for sure, but I have a feeling that they will want more than a year for ER. I am a tele nurse and I have two years of experience. There are quite a few hospitals that I can't get interviews at because they want someone with three. And that's for a tele position.
