I am really interested in taking my travel career into my own hands and travelling in an RV or a 5th Wheel, I can't figure out where to even start though. Does anyone have any tips to give me on where to start with this venture and what I need to look out for?

I'm a 30 something single woman, a little nervous about the safety of the RV parks ,but I really don't know where to start with gathering information for this stuff. Any help is appreciated!!!!!

This question is asked frequently and you can find a number of threads right here:

Perhaps even better is looking on RV specific forums such as Escapees, RV.net, and iRV2. Look for subforums called fulltimers. There you will find much advice about vehicles, parks, travel, insurance, safety, and mailing addresses. Be careful with the last though, how many fulltimers handle taxes, residency and mail may not be compatible with maintaining a tax home as a travel nurse.

RV parks have more of a community feel than most regular neighborhoods and they look out for each other. On the road, you may be safer in an RV than a car as no one can tell who is in there with you!

I know of one couple who travel using a travel trailer to their assignments. I myself will be heading out soon with my retired husband and animals in a class A. The irv2 site Ned mentioned has its own section just for those rving solo. It can be more expensive sometimes than finding regular places to stay but honestly I prefer to be in my own bed at night and with the animals this is kinda the way to go for us. I've read on the irv2 site about alot of single women in particular who travel solo so you will not be alone.

Ned, Thank you so much, I was getting nowhere on the threads because everything I had found was years old. I have a sticks and bricks house, so my tax home is not a worry for me. I just felt like i was in a bit of information overload as well - didn't know quite where to start!

I've been travelling in a fifth wheel for a year with my wife and kid. No issues with RV park safety anywhere we have been. She is home alone with the child all day while I'm at work, and has never felt unsafe.

Do your research before you commit to any rv park. Websites don't tell the whole truth. Always have a back up RV park in mind, because you never really know until you show up. Read all the campground reviews you can about the parks you might stay in.

As far as the motorhome/fifth wheel conversation.....motorhomes are nice because you can tow a small car for commuting to work. But you then have two motors to maintain. Fifth wheels are nice because of the opposite, one motor to maintain. Make sure you research towing capacities and REAL fifth wheel weights before you commit.

Our fifth wheel was listed as 8,500lbs dry, but in reality, it was 9,300lbs. Then we added 850lbs of stuff for our lives. Do research on Gross combined weight rating, axle loads, transmissions, etc before you commit to truck/fifth wheel. Motorhomes are less of a concern. We used to use a 22' motorhome and towed a Toyota truck a long time ago when we travelled. I prefer the fifth wheel.
