Things to Consider when Traveling?

My husband and I (both ICU nurses) are hoping to relocate to the east coast to be closer to family. His daughter lives in Maryland, so that's where we're looking. We've been talking about taking travel assignments to get us out there, give us time to decide where exactly we want to live and work -- but I know absolutely nothing about traveling. What are the things to look for in a company, in an assignment? What lessons have you learned the hard way? What are the pros and cons to traveling?

Any information anyone can give me would be appreciated.

I'd sit down and make a list of what your needs are: pay rate that you consider acceptable, type of housing you need, travel reimbursement, what benefits/insurance, etc. you want. Then call/e-mail various agencies to see if they fit your requirements and how many jobs they have in the area you are looking for. Decide if you want to look specifically for MD or would be willing, for example to also consider PA, DE, northern VA, etc. Ask what kind of support system you will have - any reputable company should have someone on call 24/7 in case of problems arising after hours. Ask what percentage of their travelers do more than one assignment with them. Ask about "strike work" if this is an issue for you - the companies that advertise ridiculously high rates are frequently doing this type of work and may not be what you want.

If you are planning to use the travel to look at permanent jobs ask if there is any restriction or fee to the hospital if you sign on as staff immediately after a contract - this can be a major issue!

You can also go to delphiforums.com and go to the Travel Nurses and Therapists Board for more info from nurses who have worked for various companies. Remember though that what works for one may not be appropriate for all. (Right now they are having a major troll infestation so you may need to wade through some nonsense, but the good info is in there and many people on that board are very helpful)

If you have any specific questions, feel free to post here or e-mail me. I've been traveling for 7 years now and don't intend to stop any time soon.

Thanks! I checked out the site -- lots of info there.

I bought the book.... Hitting the Road. A guide to travel nursing.

It's a great book and very helpful. I suggest to start with a well known company and that has quite a few years on business.

That's a great idea! Do you remember who wrote it?
