Las Vegas NV travel assignment

I was just offered a 13 week travel position at UMC in Vegas. Does anyone know anything about the hospital. Has anyone traveled there that can share some light on my assignment?

all the hospitals in vegas are terrible. if you can get another job i would.

RNFiona, I don't have personal experience, but I have heard only bad things about the hospitals in Vegas....horrible nurse to patient ratios and unsatisfactory work conditions. Every travel agency has positions posted for Vegas if that tells you anything.

Kind of unfair to label all Vegas hospitals " terrible" if you have never worked in one. What do you consider a horrible nurse to patient ratio? To me, ratios are not what matters...it's the acuity. You can have 4 half-dead unstable patients or 10 easy patients. Trust me I will take the 10. And it also depends on your previous experience and what your expectations are. A nurse with experience in a NYC emergency room may not think a Vegas emergency room is so terrible. Yet someone who comes from a rural 10 bed ER may think otherwise. It's all relative.

I wasn't speaking from experience, just stating what I heard. I do know last year, several travelers went there and on the first day their contracts were canceled, some with AM and some with On Assignment. Don't know the outcome of that.

But there are other forums that are directed especially for travelers that can give you more in depth details, but I don't know if sharing of that info is allowed.

I have worked in places that I thought were awful whereas other people thought it was best place ever. And vice versa... If I based my decisions on another nurse's experience I may have missed out on some great opportunities. Bottom line, you gotta see for yourself ..

No experience with UMC, but did work at another Vegas hospital as a traveler. It was a long time ago, and since it was a different place and time, my experience is probably not helpful. But, of course, the upside is you are in Vegas. We did a lot of casino hopping, tried to find the best hot dog in Vegas and who had the best penny slots (see, it WAS a long time ago!). And then we would go to the desert, to Scotty's Castle, etc. Lots to do and see that helped balance out any negatives. We even went to a 'house' and visited with some of the girls, which was facinating as a nurse...but that's another story.

So instead if someone says a facility is terrible even though they have never worked in that facility then I should take their word for it? Nothing wrong with asking for advice. Sometimes it is helpful. But what may seem terrible to one nurse may not seem so bad to another.

Have you worked in Vegas? Have you ever seen a positive comment about Vegas hospitals? There seems to be a consensus that they are really bad, some worse than others.

The general consensus by the few who commented on this thread? Saying they are bad is not enough . I want details.What MAKES them bad? It would be nice to have examples of what makes them bad from folks who actually worked there. They very well may be. But just making a general statement that they are all terrible is not helpful. Because something that may seem terrible to one nurse may not seem terrible to another.
