Hospital Parking as a Travel Nurse

I have some general questions.I just thought about this now, because all these years I was a staff nurse and Parking was always provided at a low cost for staff, or Just flat out free. I got lucky with parking at my first contract, because the parking here is free.

In the big cities, what do travel nurses do? Do they bring their cars? Do they not bring their cars? I worked in LA once before and I feel like not having a car out there would be difficult. Do you provide housing with parking? How about in LA? I could probably still find housing with parking through AirBnB. And then as far as parking at the hospitals go, Do Travel Co. offer any type of parking reimbursement? Do the hospitals offer the same parking plan to the travelers as they do their own staff? If I'm working at a place like Martin Luther King in Los Angeles, the last thing I want to do is walk to work….. (I'd like to work there, not walk there) At the same time, I'd rather not live in that neighborhood also. haha… What do the travelers who work at MLK do? Thanks for your time!

Parking issues will be addressed within your contract. I had a Hawaii contract. Parking was a big issue, as parking space is extremely limited in the area. I had to pay $10 / month.. the same as regular staff. It depends on your contract and the hospital accommodations.

Varies with every single hospital in the country. Often parking in a remote lot is free with a shuttle. I personally always commute by bicycle - better parking than physicians! Often my entire commute is shorter on a bicycle than the shuttle takes from the remote parking. Of course, I usually limit my housing choices to within 6 miles of the hospital. One assignment I drove close to the hospital (in their lot) and took the bicycle the last mile and a half. I don't do public transport because a bicycle (sometimes skates) is always faster.

The agency will usually reimburse you for hospital parking. Always ask. Parking for your apartment should be part of your housing.

All one pot of money, right? If you negotiate up as high as possible, everything else extra comes out of your pay. That is not to say it might not be advantageous to change some of your taxable pay to stipends to pay for legitimate business expenses such as scrubs and parking.

But forget about "free", that is just marketing. It all comes out of your pay one way or another. Consider: will you be so enamored of an agency that offers free scrubs every assignment and forget to shop around to find another agency pays $5 an hour more? Your emotions will tell you to pick the first "free", but hopefully your rational decision making skills well set aside marketing.

My travel company provided me with a $400

tax-free scrub allowance. It's annual.

Yes. It seems like the pay all drains from one large pot. You can receive it in different ways but all adds up to 100% no matter how you divy up the total pay. I took the scrub allowance but my overall take home pay is phenomenal. I'll never return to staff nursing ever again. P.S. I own a home back home. lol

Yes, some agencies do. You know what people constantly forget to ask I always remind them to ask. Faststaff won't cover parking or scrubs. I worked for KPG once and they covered my parking and reimbursed me for two sets of scrubs. I don't think anybody covers parking in NYC.
