Where to live in Dallas

U.S.A. Texas

Hey everyone! I recently accepted a position at Baylor University Medical Center and am moving to Dallas sometime in January. However, I am not from the area and would love some suggestions on where to live. Any help would be appreciated :)

Oh yeah sweet congrats. I live in Arlington area right now but will be moving soon into Greenville area right by 75. Bumc is magnet as you know and Baylor is looked up to as place that gives awesome insurance with very crappy pay, not sure if that's true, but overall I heard Baylor treats nurses right.

If you are young and fun, and don't care much about paying high rent, I suggest in uptown but they are expensive. If you explain your situation though, such as married or single, Apt or house, budget range etc I can give you better suggestion.

There are many apartments ranging between up and down the 700s to over 1000 in Greenville Ave. If you don't like the in-city, you can choose outer suburbs. There are some places you need to avoid though. Lemme know welcome to Dallas! What departmrnt will you be?

Thanks for the response! My husband and I are both graduating from nursing school and are looking for a one bedroom apartment in the Dallas area near BUMC. I've heard Deep Ellum is a sketchy area, but I don't want to live further than like 15 minutes from the hospital (with traffic). We are willing to pay up to 1200, but if we can stay below that range and still stay in a safe and pretty area, that would be great. If you have any suggestions for apartments just let me know!

The Marquis at Gaston and Broadstone Ambrose apartments are walking distance from the hospital. I know they give Baylor College of Dentistry and Baylor Nursing students discount, I want to say employees also too. I have friends that attended those schools live there that didn't have any problems. The Nursing building is walking distance and the Dentistry school is connected to hospital. Also Deep Ellum can get pretty busy on the weekends mostly but it's not as bad as everyone makes it seem. Laid back atmosphere and nice places to eat out late.

Also check out The Icon at Ross (pretty new), Marquis at Texas Street and Vue Live Oak. Those are probably 10 mins away from the hospital at least. Those are nice also. And I think they are still building an apartment complex off of Good Latimer not sure if those are done yet.

well if you have budget of 1200, then you have variety of options. i personally would be very careful in scanning the area though, because Dallas is little weird, on one side it is nice, clean and full of new, modern housing, then a mile down the road, it's ghetto and hood, full of gun shot stories and drug activities. I personally wouldn't live all the way down near BUMC, or near medical district, since that area is little sketchy to me.

You have uptown as an option; just bump 200 more per month and you can live in gables uptown which is a place I really wanted to move in, but monthly rent for 1 bed was 1400 or so, but it's condo and that place calls for the price. all other apartments around that area and little north of there are really fancy and nice: for example, gables, AMLI, marquis, and other high towers. there are numerous bars around uptown and the infrastructure and upkeep of uptown is impeccable.

I suggest going to google map and locate gables uptown, and then type "apartment" then just scan the whole area north and slightly east of it. you will see many many apartments. I'm sure you will do this, but do go visit the apartments that you guys will choose as high prospects, because you want to avoid the hood areas. :)

With your budget, you can get something nice close to where u work. Keep in mind, you work in a sketchy area. The place you want to be is all surrounded by sketchy and expensive and it's all relatively close together. I think you can get something nice, but if you don't stay in uptown your nice will be one minute from sketchy. Which mean the criminals will just walk to you. I wouldn't suggest the Greenville area only because in recent years even the nice places have crime problems but they still charge a fortune. Look on the west side of I-75 close to highland park/ turtle creek area. Even if you have to pay one to two more hundred a month. I'd feel more comfortable over there. FYI watch your surroundings coming out of work! Good luck!!

Thank y'all for the suggestions! We are planning a trip up to Dallas to scout the area, so if y'all think of anything else let me know.

Also I am working in the CV-ICU. Are you going to be working at BUMC?

No I don't work at bumc, but I work at one of the main hospital systems in dfw! Good luck!

Hey everyone! I recently accepted a position at Baylor University Medical Center and am moving to Dallas sometime in January. However, I am not from the area and would love some suggestions on where to live.
If I could do it all over again I would live in a centrally located part of the Metroplex such as Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Euless, Irving or East Arlington. If you live in any one of these cities, you will be located equidistant between Dallas and Fort Worth. This means you will be a quick commute away from any job. In addition, the rents are cheaper in these areas.

Just because you secured employment at BUMC doesn't mean you'll be working there forever. Many people I know have moved on from BUMC due to the pay. I'd personally want to to live in a strategic location. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Congrats! I'll be moving there as well for January. Maybe.

I live 5 minutes away from Baylor in Old East Dallas. I like it but it IS kinda sketchy at times... I think Lakewood, Junius Heights, M Streets, Lower Greenville, Uptown, White Rock are all places you should look - but look in person. If you want to live in the Suburbs, Garland and Mesquite are a 15 minute drive from Baylor.
